He's probably still pissed off the Welsh rugby team team couldn't do as well as the Derby Council against the All Blacks last world cup.

He posted over there just two days ago. I don't go there often and never read the comments; I found him with a Google search.

If we really really want him back: Should I make the sacrifice to check daily and register with Pharyngula (shudder!) to invite him back?

And if I do it, what's in it for me?

Yes, you should do it, and since he's known to do a little chemistry, he can whip you up some awe inspiring cocktails...

Did he leave because I was an ass to him about PZ?

If so,

I am sorry louis. You are one of my favorite internet acquaintances and a highly original thinker which makes your absence doubly painful to me. First, because I did not take care to be respectful of your position and potentially soured you on something which has the occasional chance of assembling ideas in a unique enough way to produce profound insight and the frequent chance of assembling ideas in such a way as to provide entertainment and comic relief. My own obliviousness and impulsiveness prods me to random behavior which I seldom even note except in hindsight such as this.  Oops doesn't really take the place of a sincere apology so I offer one here.

I have often wished for a world where I wouldn't be taken seriously but the reality is that if I did offend you, all I can do is say that I would not have done so intentionally and accept that the outcome is my responsibility. If there is some way to set the record back I will do my best with full attention and respect.

Second, in those occasional chance arrangements of previously unconnected or fuzzy ideas which inspire new connections and original thought, you have played a major role in facilitating some of the most creative and profound (to me anyway) insights which have ever come to me. I actually owe you a debt of gratitude for your willingness to provide your thoughts on this forum though I hoped I could thank you over a pint or 30 in london some summer soon rather than while I apologize for being an ass.

I am trying to figure out when I can go to the UK in the next two years for several reasons, one of those is to buy you a beer. Though, to be honest, I might not have decided to figure out the trip just to buy you a beer. But once I had an excuse to go, it was already on the hopeful itinerary.

Anyway, I didn't see your flounce but I hope you added a flourish or two. Flounces, after all, are one of the ways we leave our marks on the world and the people in it.

I will go and look for it. If it had nothing to do with my crusade against PZ, and the accompanying oblivious impulsiveness which characterizes so much of my internet behavior of late, then I still owe you an apology because iirc, I told you I would get back to you with a reasoned response and never did.

That may be a good thing in the overall state of affairs actually. I have tried to summarize my point many times since then and I think I have managed to successfully communicate the explanation to somewhere in the range of zero people who weren't already inclined to understand.

At any rate, If it wasn't me, then I hope whatever it was is something small enough that the balance tips to entice you back.

If none of that works, I've talked to Rich and he said sheep are easy to procure down in his neck of the woods. He could assemble a photo montage or something maybe?

:) Or he could just send you one of his collections of older montages.

Also, if you didn't have a youngin, I would call you a baby or something. But, having three myself, though they're done being youngins, I am well aware of the unique weight it adds to the calculus of effort-reward. No time and no tolerance for stupidity are like little baby albatrosses that hang off a parent's neck for 15-18 years.

Hope to see you in London someday.

FTK, I just read it. What louis did is not what you do. Maybe flounce needs some qualifiers.

I just discovered that I didn't compose a thoughtful response until the very last page and it was tangential to the OP and posted well after the issue had faded from the front page.

I did the responding elsewhere and sort of felt like it counted as fulfilling my obligation here. I really do owe Louis an apology because I baited him with empty rhetoric and never made a substantive response to him at all. When he, according to the norms of this site, which I too share, demanded I provide substantiation, I simply didn't. I was too busy over at the other place assembling a documentary of sorts and just plain failed.

I pulled an FTK and no one else called me on it. (Well not very many people.) The ones who actually did make an argument sort of legitimized my empty value judgement by using it as a jumping off point. I can understand why that irritated louis. He's a guy that will admit he's wrong but it damn well needs to be clear what he is wrong about.

I didn't even name it. I just barged in and said his beliefs were not just wrong but potentially evil. Nothing specific. If he identified with PZ, he has the right, I think, to be upset. Or at least to expect me to abide by the norms of this forum. Provide an argument at least.

And I guess I really do owe everyone an apology.

In the future, I will refrain from posting in involved threads late at night or on my phone. And I will keep my rants at Talkrational where they don't stand out. And I'm sorry about not responding to louis when I said I would.

Ftk, it's fine if you don't understand. I don't feel like I brown nosed. I feel like I set him up by indicating that I wanted to argue a point. I never did. He set himself up for a kind of a major time investment because, and this is the part that matters, because I asked him to. The unwritten I guess but still perfectly well understood ethic among the regulars on this site anyway, certainly including louis, is intellectual integrity.

I entered a transaction which really did obligate me, maybe not you or someone else, but it did obligate me, to a set of expectations which I hope for from others here sometimes and I simply took his effort and didn't even show it the respect of an attempt to fulfill my end of the deal. An end which, though it may not be apparent to you, is apparent to me.

Louis is an asshole mean ass sonofabitch sometimes, blind to his weaknesses, arrogant to a fault even, but he paid me the respect I asked for and laid out his case. And despite hid stubborness and any other negative quality which you may want tp assign him, they pale to insignificance before the 2 qualities which he has never ever wavered from in my interactions with him, unflinching honesty and intellectual integrity. He might make you exhaust every single silly detail imaginable in a discussion, but when he recognizes error, it is recognized and the discussion moves on.  He does not sacrifice truth to his ego. He doesn't lie (here, in the sort of discussion I started) because lies are not part of the discovery of truth.

Louis is a chemist. That is a fairly rigorous type of science, dealing with painfully delicate measurement and materials handling issues. Truth is a precious commodity in his  realm of investigation. You are unlikely meet 10 people in your life who are as willing to discard their own faulty beliefs the moment they fail in internal consistency or to correspond to observation, acknowledge error with little fanfare, and amend their understanding to reflect new information as louis has been here.

And I feel pretty safe saying that really because evolution  isn't a plot. It's simply the best fitting model available to us which explains what we observe and predicts what will be in the next blank. Religion I fear is dealing its own death blow by blatantly denying the actual truth of the existence of data which is available any person with an internet connection and a car that will take them to the closest natural history museum to protect the meaningless truths of religion, the ones which were old science and have been amended to include more and better information at the cost of tbhe truths which do mean something. The ones which haven't been replaced with better truths. To save noah you will sacrifice jesus.

It does color my interactions with you somewhat to be honest. But I still offer you honest explanations and answers without too much judgment. I never had to let go of that kind of truth so I don't pretend to know how hard it is. However, the argument is over. The physical universe is what we model with science. Any statement or question you can make about the physical universe is a scientific question.

The creationist ID argument really is "breathtaking inanity" to someone who understands the value of self-honesty as it applies to truth. That is not a dig by the way. When measurement was difficult and precision was poor, the rules were that faith does a pretty good job of keeping us alive. Don't just let go of this precious gift in favor any tom dick or harry that happens by. Any truth is valuable, precious even. And they needed to at least not obviously fail to make into the holy word, the collection of almost every single truth known to man at the time.

No, I don't fault you for choosing to hold onto a truth rather than let someone trick you into taking a worse one.

But once a better truth emerges, the value of the old one is erased. If you refuse to believe in the hyperinflation of the Wiemar republic, could not accept that your money had become worthless, the option to stay at home and look at it, pretending it still has value may avert the shock of coping for some time, a lifetime even if you have enough stored supplies, but you didn't save the value. You saved the symbol.

Something about False Idols comes to mind but it's not quite there.  Regardless. my own regret concerning the possible rejection by association of our truths about ourselves preserved largely in the same texts beside the failed truths, occasionally tugs at me.  But I have read those texts very carefully and done my best to remind people I know that there might be a baby in the bathwater of the same bibles that the evangelicals slander with every time they pass a reference to Ken Ham or Jack Chick without taking a stand and rejecting hate as hate. Ignorance as ignorance and propaganda as propaganda.

But, if you decide to take a moral stand against their dishonesty and hateful behavior, maybe you can avoid the mistake of my poor example. Simply refuse to legitimize it. Don't forget your other obligations in your zealousness regardless of the depth of your emotional rejection, because you might not notice if you go too far. And too, there is no real gain in fighting the other side. The better truth always wins. Instead demand integrity from your own side. Reject hate speech and bigotry wherever you encounter it.

Because opposing sides don't police each other fairly. If you really value truth, you do your part over there, I'll do my part over here, and we can compare notes over a couple of bong hits  and bottle of bourbon every saturday at 9:00am before the equal protection for all people strategy session at 9:30am.

I'm speaking for louis here since he's not here to speak for himself, both Louis and I visited enough to be regulars here (even though I've been a lot less active since 2008) because encountered a common ethic that honesty and truth are basically valued above all else in this particular digital microcosm. While it offers no sanctuary from criticism or protection from pet beliefs that don't do well outside, it also offers a community who each are willing to call someone out on any perceived error and are intolerant of any breaches in honesty or intellectual integrity no matter where the source.   From my perspective, I broke that compact in this case.

Anyway, even without thinking about it I paid the respect I felt needed to be paid to my obligation to answer with a thoughtful and considered response even though you may not feel I owe it to you. I certainly don't hold you to the standards which I do indeed hold louis to. Again, I respect your inclination to hold your cards. That is your choice.

But we use different systems and I do not cash the currency your truths are minted in. Sorry. I respect that you like them but I value transparency and require agreement between prediction and experience from my truths, I do not trust someone else to verify my truths. I am quite competent to assess the ones I encounter on my own almost every time.

What I did to PZ, I am comfortable with and feel no need to apologize for. What I did to louis I am not comfortable with and I owe him an apology. And that's why I apologized. It isn't brown nosing to me. Or I guess i don't care how you see it. It was me who felt the need to try to at least acknowledge my mistake and offer my apology.

Hope that explains it. If he comes back, I won't owe him agreement but an honest and considered explanation for my opinion.

Last seen on this (rather ugly) thread:

http://freethoughtblogs.com/pharyng....olution

Rich: sent him a SMS, didn't mention you. Maybe it was a mistake not to...

Louis: "...sick to the back teeth..."

Damn I like that expression! Never heard it before. Can't say me dad ever uttered it growing up, so I don't know if it's an English thing, a regional thing, or just a thing one picks up, but darn it...I likes it!

...and it's so Louis!  ;)

ETA: Ha ha...Louis is off is meds!

There...I said it. That will bring him back just to beat me or lambast my thoughtlessness if nothing else.

Here in France, it's quite common: "j'ai les dents du fond qui trempent", or "my back teeth are soaked"...

You can't fool me.  I've studied my Mark Twain and I know that that really means "I have the teeth of the back who soak."

It ought to have been. I'm on my 3rd day of the really awful flue. Advil have been keeping my fever down to about 100. I don't feel nauseous but food is totally unappealing so I'v e mostly had v-8 juice, water and vitamin c  to survive on. Haven't slept for more than 3 hours at a stretch either. Delirium is my most reliable muse.

Anyway, I wanted to set ftk straight in case she thought I was on her side in the culture wars or something. :)

Perhaps you should hang out with other people.  All it takes is watching a news clip of Rick Santorum to know that the culture wars are not confined to the interwebs.  You display the same obliviousness and lack of curiosity now that I've always said you possess.

While that is somewhat of a dig, it is mostly (80% or so) a call to intellectual honesty.  If you read my first paragraph it should cause you to re-evaluate your statement.  Perhaps you will not agree with my assessment, but you should be able to justify your disagreement.  You won't because you are uninterested in doing so.  IMO, that is the main difference between you and folks like BWE and louis.

Well, that's true. I live in Portland and I don't really know a single fundamentalist. I know of a couple who I encounter at work occasionally but religion around here isn't the kind that you notice. It's more the jesus type christians we have here than the Leviticus christians. Darwin fish and spaghetti monster fish are common enough but you notice the car that has a jesus fish because its been a few days or a week since you saw the last one. Sometimes a little overflow from the crazies presses at the periphery of town and threatens our little paradise, more often in the form of republicans or walmarts than actual christians but I remember when Luis Palau or something did this big revival at the waterfront park and the big long church vans trucked in like thousands of people from the compounds in the hills I guess or somewhere. It was a wild caravan for sure. Ayway, another 10000 people or so came out to see the christians!

Most of them were pretty decent. I don't think there was any violence or anything. I went down for a while. It was a really nice day so I figured I should since it wasn't an everyday thing and all.

I wasn't going to pile on here, since this thread is about Louis-baiting.*

But anyone who thinks the culture war is mostly on the internet is truly ignorant of the US and most of the rest of the world.

We have not one, but two potential presidential candidates who think that winning the culture war means the establishment of a US Theocracy where the rich are almighty and everyone else is a serf with no rights.  Note that under Santorum (and probably Romney) all women, by definition, would be serfs.

We already live in a society where good things are shot down for political reasons and stupid things are promoted for both political and personal wealth reasons (of which we serfs aren't getting any).

We live in a society where a teacher burns a bunch of kids with a tesla coil, ignores directives from his superiors, and lies to the students he supposed to be teaching, but he's a martyr because he was religiously discriminated against.

I could go on and on about this.

Don't tell me the culture war is mostly on the internet.  The culture war is right in front of you... you're just OK with the battles that are going on.  I bet if an atheist rock band came to your kid's school and told the kids there was no heaven, no hell, this is all there is, you'd be pissed.  But it's OK when a Christian band does it because you believe their message is the correct one.

Heck, it's not so much a culture war as simply a war for equality.  Anything you can do, I get to do... unless I'm an atheist, or gay, or a woman, or a pagan, or anything that's not Christian.

You may not agree with all the things I've mentioned.  You may not agree with the majority of things that are occurring in this culture war.  But, very simply, you are giving you tacit approval by not standing up for equal rights and the truth.

Personally, I think of Christianity as a bunch of liars.  Because the only Christians I hear talking are the ones that are liars.  I don't hear the silent ranks of the majority of Christians who aren't liars.  I don't hear any Catholic priests saying how wrong it is to hide a child molester.  I don't hear Baptist ministers talking about how you shouldn't threaten gays with death.  Again, I could go on and on.

I'm sorry, I have gone on and on.  But the blind hypocrisy of the religious continually stuns me.  Even when it's pointed out to them, they won't do anything about it.

Then they have the nerve to demand that everyone in this country behave exactly as they do.  Actually, they are requiring that we behave exactly as they SAY to do, not as they actually DO.  They decry birth control, yet have that prescription for viagra in their pocket.

Ok, I'm done.  Back to Louis baiting.

Fear mongering.....

You're crazy....it's the crazies like you who spread the BS that candidates who claim to be Christians are looking to form a theocracy.  Anyone with even a quarter of a brain knows that would end up in absolute disaster.

The *crazy*, paranoid, conspiracy folks are the ones that go on and on and on and on about the evils of religion or atheism.

Fucking just get along.  We have it all here where I live.  People believe different things.  For the most part, we live our lives and keep it to ourselves.  I have friends who I know disagree with me about religion and politics or whatever, but when we know we've hit a hot button, we stop.  What is so freaking hard about that?

Nothing will ever change as far as different belief systems...you must know that.  Various levels of different beliefs will always be out there.  What is the point in spewing hatred in regard to those opposing beliefs.  I'll never get it.  Ever.

Heck, we have gay and atheist groups at my kids high school.  So what?  My kids don't go to them of course because they don't agree with their beliefs.

I just think the whole freaking world needs to take a damn chill pill.

sigh....share the statements where any of the candidates say they want to form a Christian theocracy.  This doesn't mean if someone doesn't support abortion, they are going to form a "theocracy"...that's just retarded.  You can have views that coincide with a religious belief...that doesn't mean you're in the race to establish a religious take over of the government.  <eyes rolling>

The speech linked at RightWingWatch is a chilling, and nauseating, example of the sort of collectively held paranoid delusions that seem so often to characterize the Christian right.

I'm not sure what you've been reading from Santorum, but he's fairly clear in a number of his statements regarding his belief that the bible should be used as the basis of our political and legislative policies. That, by definition, would be a Christian theocracy.

I think perhaps it would be fun to have a reality TV game in which presidential candidates fight to the death.

Just a passing thought.

Back to the regularly scheduled show.

Thank you Robin.

FtK, you see, unlike the people you may normally deal with.  I can support, with evidence everything I say.  I learned a long time ago that making shit up was not a way to be successful.  If I'm wrong, I own up to it.

But, if I said it, I can back it up.

Every single thing... and, as I said, I could on for ages about all the things that's OK for Christians and no OK for anyone else... at least in our culture.  It may be legal, it may be morally OK, but it's not OK if you aren't a Christian (or white or male or rich).

If you really don't think that there are privileged classes in the world, then I'd like to introduce you to Trayvon Martin... oh wait, I can't because he's dead and his killer was never arrested or even questioned by the local police.

Same thing with religious leaders.  Thirty-year history of molesting young children?  Let's just move him somewhere out of the way... like Boston.

You ask "what's so freaking hard about that?"  The answer is very simply look at you and evolution.

You simply refuse to be persuaded by 150 years of peer-reviewed research on the topic.  Well guess what, some people are exactly the same way when it comes to political policy.

It doesn't matter that cutting spending is the worst thing you could do in a massive recession.  It is theoretically wrong, history has shown it's wrong, yet some politicians still want to do it.  They are unpersuaded by all the evidence.

Now, apply that to religion.  Do you think this country was founded as a Christian nation?  It doesn't matter, you don't make policy.  One of the people running for president does think that this was founded as a Christian nation and that no other religion should be here.

So much for melting pot.

FtK, you may be reasonable (I don't think so, but other than evolution you may be), but OTHER PEOPLE MAY NOT be.

They don't want me to live as I want to.  They demand that I be a Christian.  They demand that my wife not have access to medication that she must have to live a stable, healthy life.  They demand a lot of things that they don't have any business demanding and that I don't want to do.

So much for the land of the free.

What in the hell does Trayvon Martin have to do with this??    If you're talking about discrimination, duh....there is discrimination against everyone for one reason or the other.    I'm not saying it's right.  I'm saying all the media bullshit taking sides with some groups over others...or highlighting what they consider discrimination, etc.. is what makes the hatred in America soar.  That's what I'm talking about when I say there is more of it on the Internet (and media for that matter) than in real life.

But, haters gonna hate...and you're one of 'em.  Everyone is against you evidently.  And, what do Christians have to do with keeping your wife from getting the medications she needs.  Hell, I don't even have health insurance atm.  None of my family does.  Can't get it unless I pay thousands to get independent life insurance until my husband's company will pay for it.  Three month waiting period bullshit, and even then the insurance they are offering is pure shit.  So, yeah, if something serious happens to me, I'm not going to be getting any medication either unless some millionaire buys it for me.  It has nothing to do with Christianity.

And, this demanding you be Christian crap?  wtf?  Where the hell do you live???????  Jesus...you say we weren't built on a Christian nation...everyone is always showing me graphs and bullshit about most people not even being Christian anymore.  Then you turn around and act like you can't do anything because you are under the thumb of the Christian theocracy.

Where do you live, btw?  I'm curious, because I live in the freaking Bible belt and there are all kinds of people living here and I've never seen anyone stop any of them from doing anything.  Heck, Kansas University is one of the move diverse colleges in the country.  Pretty much anything goes.  I have no idea what you are bitching about.

I'll go read your links now.  I'm guessing a lot of quote mining.

Onlookers:

This is a Great Idea, and similar to my idea of a couple of years ago of allowing Ordinary People to punch out Fox "News" personalities.  I do understand that with Glenn Beck now banished, that ratings will be down, but hey, who doesn't still want to punch a Bill O'Reilly, or a Meghan Kelly?

This will all be for charity, so step right up!

And just think how may milllions we could raise right here, if we could play Bitch-Slap An IDiot*, or play Pie A DI Guy?

* Prices may be higher for Islanders

ps:  For all IDiots out there - this is what's called humor.  Not to be confused with reality. Neither I not anyone on this board is calling for a Crusade against Fox, IDCists, or even Monsters From Montserrat.

And now back to your regularly scheduled broacasting...

ok...link one...nothing in there stating Santorum would turn the nation into a Christian theocracy.

Link two....laughable.  They take one sentence from him and then they write a whole article literally putting words and thoughts into his mouth and mind.  Freaking truly unbelievable.

The other links seem to be coming from "right wing watch".  Are you fer real?  I'll read them, but these are the sites *looking* to create insanity....they feed off it.

Both sides have these type of fear mongering, crazy rhetoric sites.  You can find some truth at them, but then they twist and contort just to get people worked up to side with their own hatred.  That's one reason why I don't read World Net Daily anymore.  They've just gone too far with a lot of things they write.

Side note here:  I'm not a Santorum backer....in fact, I'm out this election.  I want no part of it, and I really don't care if that makes me a bad American, Christian or whatever.

All they do, typically, is directly link to the people saying what they have a problem with. Often with video.

You'll notice the majority of each piece consists of direct quotes.

If quoting people in their own words in context is "creating insanity" it's no wonder you have a problem with democracy.

Or two pages on the degree to which Obama is consistently apologizing to Islam while attacking the Catholic Church? Do you see anybody in the elite media prepared to say, gee, isn’t this kind of odd, that we really worry a lot about the Qur'an and nothing about the Bible?

k...read the Huffington post article.

?  Really?  That = Christian Theocracy.

I agree with them in regard to evolution being the only consideration for origins in the classroom.  There is nothing wrong with considering that there is an ultimate Creator/Designer, and there is science to back that consideration. It should be taught.

That certainly doesn't me I would support a Christian theocracy!

Hence, as I've also said, I'm not voting.  Period.  The whole voting process is a freaking circle jerk, and the candidates are all worthless.  Nothing is going to change regardless of whom you pick from that bunch, and I'm certainly not voting to keep Obama in.  So, F it...I'm out.

No dismissal vis POV need apply. Rather, a lengthy recording and transcript of a Santorum talk are posted. Juicy raw data.

His "Satan attacking academia first" rhetoric reflects a form of collective, quasi-delusional, quasi-paranoid* thinking, exactly what you don't want rattling around the head of a U.S. president.

*I qualify these characterizations because I don't think Santorum suffers mental illness. I do think that communities can embark on collectively held lines of pathological perception and interpretation that closely mimic the products of truly disturbed thinking. Santorum and his think-group scare the shit out of me.

Here's kinda what I"m talking about.  People like Trayvon  sometimes get *used* to great hatred by people like Sharpton or whomever to try to prove a point or cause further hatred.

You won't see this story get the coverage Trayvon's did..nor will the President be speaking about it as he did with Trayvon being compared to what his son might look like.

A hate crime is a hate crime.  Period.  They are all wrong.  But, some are used by groups to up the anty on hatred toward one group or another.

Here is my opinion. I'm not going to support it with facts though. I'm just going to offer it. I don't care what label you choose to apply, if you condemn the label you are intentionally closing your mind.

Not that we don't all do it sometimes. But I think if we start with the recognition that injustice is the same thing no matter what label it falls under, then we can start to oppose the actual events rather than the abstract representations. If you want to occupy wall street, don't bitch about the rich and the poor, bitch about inequality. Don't stand in the street, block the crime from taking place upstairs.

If someone attacks a person with the intent to intimidate them and leave them in fear, the person not the mindset is the problem.

Even if there are 500 people with the mindset. The act is the problem. Address the act.

If religions want to put bibles in schools have them put in a locker.

We get thinking the fundies are the problem then they have already committed the crime and the question is what do we have to do to round them up. Same goes for Atheists blacks rich poor homeless whatever.

It just makes the work seem less to condemn the whole group but we can always only deal with problems one at a time.

Education and religion are not the same. If your religion is threatened by education then something is wrong with your religion if your atheism is threatened by religion then something is wrong with your atheism. Abstractions are the source of hate crimes. Not the solution. There is violence. There is hate. There is justice. It is not an abstraction. It is the action society takes to address a problem. Individually. If you feel the urge to make someone stop talking. The problem is you.

If you feel the urge to talk, you have a shot at being the solution.

A hate crime is a hate crime.  Period.  They are all wrong.  But, some are used by groups to up the anty on hatred toward one group or another.

But you miss the essential point.  That article says that the KC police didn't know who the attackers were, but that they were investigating the incident as a possible hate crime.  Even though the victim survived with what sound like relatively minor injuries, a detective from the KCPD is quoted as calling the attack "heinous." The article is short, but gives no indication that all the bases were not being appropriately covered.

The Sanford FL police knew who shot and killed Trayvon Martin, and further had evidence that the shooting was unprovoked, and did nothing about it.  Nothing.

That's the source of the outrage.

why do you guys argue with ftk?

I
Is it a sign of respect, that statements deserve an answer?
Is is a sign of contempt, that her statements deserve an answer?
Is a habit, that statements come before answers and she manages to put them in the click slot and that automates the whirr response?

This idea space is not mapping for me at all.

I can understand As,king her about her worldmap or describing one to her, but for the life of me I can't imagine arguing with her.

Simply because the words are spelled the same, but the referents don't even fit the syntax of each others languages let alone point toward similar units.

Oh, and BWE, I have no idea why you worry about people who disagree with your stance on PZ....he's an ass...he is problematic to Darwin's message due to his militant, illogical stance on...well, on pretty much everything.  Have a backbone, man.

Your failure to understand is noted.

i. BWE is not concerned about a disagreement.
ii. Whether PZ is an ass or not, nothing (so far) is "problematic to Darwin's message"*.
iii. Having a backbone is all about acknowledging mistakes. Refusing to do so indicates a lack of awareness/honesty, not a lack of backbone.

*That particular phrase makes me think, you believe that evidence based reasoning = propaganda/lies.

Anyway, most people want Louis back because he is fun, insightful and educational. Call it brown-nosing if you want to, it isn't.

ok...link one...nothing in there stating Santorum would turn the nation into a Christian theocracy.

Your inability to comprehend Santorum's statement is noted. I'll provide the relevant quote here and note Santorum's mistake that illustrates his agenda:

Quote
“He is imposing his values on a church that has theological reasons for, and moral reasons for not allowing this type of care to be given through their institutions.”

The problem - as Santorum later realizes and attempts to correct - is that Obama is a Christian. So to accuse Obama of imposing his values on the Church is stating that somehow Obama's Christian values are not appropriate for the church. And as he earlier noted,

Quote
"The Catholic church has a theology that says this is wrong, and he’s saying no I’ve got a different, I’ve got a different – you may want to call it a theology, you may want to call it secular values, whatever you want to call it, it’s a different moral values. And the president of the United States is exercising his values and trumping the values of the church."

So here he is stating that President Obama is imposing his non-church values on the United States. And this is, in Santorum's opinion, WRONG. So, this is no different than Santorum stating that he (Santorum) disagrees with Obama's "secular values", but that he would make sure to impose the Catholic Church values on the United States. That would be a theocracy.

Quote
Link two....laughable.  They take one sentence from him and then they write a whole article literally putting words and thoughts into his mouth and mind.  Freaking truly unbelievable.

Apparently you failed to read the money quote:

Quote
"I don’t believe in an America where the separation of church and state is absolute.  The idea that the church can have no influence or no involvement in the operation of the state is absolutely antithetical to the objectives and vision of our country,” said Santorum.

There's not quotemine here nor is anyone putting words in Santorum's mouth. He's quite upfront in stating that he does not accept the First Amendment's - and more specifically Thomas Jefferson's - separation of  church and state. He straightforwardly believes that church values should be used to influence executive, legislative, and judicial actions. He's not even being coy about it. That's a theocratic position, FtK.

Quote
The other links seem to be coming from "right wing watch".  Are you fer real?  I'll read them, but these are the sites *looking* to create insanity....they feed off it.

Both sides have these type of fear mongering, crazy rhetoric sites.  You can find some truth at them, but then they twist and contort just to get people worked up to side with their own hatred.  That's one reason why I don't read World Net Daily anymore.  They've just gone too far with a lot of things they write.

I posted them for Santorum's quotes. All that matters to me is showing what Santorum thinks. Santorum's speech is there in it's entirety. He believes that the United States is under attack by forces for Satan and that this needs to be fought - culturally, academically, and politically. That would be theocratic thinking.

The last link I provided goes to a speech Santorum made saying the creationism should be taught in science class. This is the prime example of theocratic thinking - that God and discussion of "God's creation" not just belong in our schools, but are scientific areas of discussion. This is the very definition of the imposition of specific (Christian) theology on methodological learning. Sorry FtK, but that doesn't wash. Creationism has been specifically banned by the Supreme Court of the US as being unconstitutional to teach as factually accurate in the public education system. Why? Not only is such a subject not science, it would be the endorsement of one particular religious opinion over all other religious opinions. Santorum is ok with that - and that's a theocratic stance.

Quote
Side note here:  I'm not a Santorum backer....in fact, I'm out this election.  I want no part of it, and I really don't care if that makes me a bad American, Christian or whatever.

Well that's up to you of course. It's disappointing that you you don't care what your involvement (or lack there of) imparts on the nation as a whole, but then again this nation would not be what it is if you did not have the right to hold that view and that stance. So more power to you.

Just keep in mind that if folks like Santorum get further into politics and gain more influence, you may one day lose your right to civil disinterest and inaction.

k...read the Huffington post article.

Please provide valid scientific evidence for a) the Christian God of the bible and b) for the events of creation as described in Genesis.

I find it odd that you would make the claim that regarding science for an ultimate creator/designer given that it is currently unconstitutional to present creationism in public schools. Seems to me that if there were actual science for such a deity, there would be a heck of lot of judicial challenges to our current legal status.

... is the entire problem.  It's a matter of faith and that's the end of it.  She (and other like her) don't think, they just do as they are told by their pastors... who, mostly know the truth, but never ever share it with their parishioners for fear of destroying that very same faith.

Why think about it, my pastor tells me what to think.  Which is another reason why they attack Darwin and Dawkins, they can't conceive of a group that isn't led in exactly the same way as their church is.

Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends.

I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning I sleep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own

I used to roll the dice
Feel the fear in my enemy's eyes
Listen as the crowd would sing
"Now the old king is dead! Long live the king!"

One minute I held the key
Next the walls were closed on me
And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand

I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field

For some reason I can't explain
Once you go there was never
Never an honest word
And that was when I ruled the world

It was the wicked and wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in
Shattered windows and the sound of drums
People couldn't believe what I'd become

Revolutionaries wait
For my head on a silver plate
Just a puppet on a lonely string
Oh who would ever want to be king?

I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field

For some reason I can't explain
I know Saint Peter won't call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world

I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field

For some reason I can't explain
I know Saint Peter won't call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world

Really? Must be a slow news day here at AtBC Towers.

I'm touched you guys and girls,* but really, agreeing with FTK is an unforgivable crime. It's just not done. I see that you have even brought her out of retirement to entice annoy me. Deary me, that's desperate. I come back, inspired by text messages from SD and emails from Doc Bill, and lurk and what do I see? FTK frothing away and people encouraging a thread for Ghost of Paley (who is banned IIRC).

I have heartburn just thinking about it. Well, I say heartburn, it's more a slight itching of the dong.

Louis

*Jokes to the usual address.

P.S. BWE, we're cool. You don't address my concerns, but we're cool. We always were. No need to apologise.

don't?

:) Just checking.

And, whether or not I needed to apologize, after reading that thread, I felt the need. It was a short crusade. The next time it flares back up, I'll start with a little bit of substance rather than what I did this last time.

As always,

Good to see you here.
