johndcal Posts: 8 Joined: Oct. 2002 (Permalink) Posted: Jan. 21 2003,00:20    In the July/August 1999 issue of TOUCHSTONE, Nancy Pearcey writes, "Finally, [intelligent] design is a winner with the public because it is a scientific research program that actually makes sense to ordinary people." Is it true? Do "ordinary people" need scientific mythology, just as children need Santa Claus? Or, does God hope that "ordinary people" will mature enough to accept known scientific facts, such as the Big Bang, Earth's age, and Darwinian biological evolution? The existence of God and historical reality of Jesus and His deity are not dependent on Biblical inerrancy and scientific mythology (modern creationism): YEC, OEC, ID. Wouldn't it be better, in the long run, to show the compatibility of Christianity with correct science? This statement is preceded by several paragraphs in which Pearcy justifys the ID movement on nothing more than narrow ideological grounds.  Then she offers us this gem.  I sure would love to see ID's scientific research program, but even if there were such a thing, I doubt anyone could find it buried under the mountains of ideological polemics. theyeti

The mere fact that he capitalized the word "Cosmos" (as religious believers capitalize"God") was a dead giveaway that he was gripped by a religious intensity. Is she seriously suggesting that a televison show should have its name written in lower case?   I guess the fact that "Friends" is capitalized should make us warry of its anti-God message?  Man, the whole line-up is one huge conspiracy against God!  Good grief, what is world comming to... theyeti

As soon as one stakes a movement on some narrowly conceived position, there is a danger of splintering off into antagonistic groups and disagreeing over the details. For too long, opponents of naturalistic evolution have let themselves be divided and conquered over subsidiary issues like the age of the earth. The beauty of design is that it can unite everyone who opposes the broad, overarching claim of naturalism while providing a common framework for working on subsidiary issues as allies. As several people have remarked, should the ID movement carry the issue some day, the very next day (metaphorical) blood will flow in the halls of the DI as the enemies of my enemy suddenly become my enemies.
