The Black Hills folks have long been controversial for their illegal excavations, and commercial practices (they were the outfit that sold the T. rex known as "Sue".) It is true that many paleontologists buy and sell fossils, but this is rarely their principle source of support. A fun book on the early years of American paleontology is "The Bone Wars."
