It's well into the 12th February where I live, so I'd like to be the first here to honour the memory of Charles Darwin and the fantastic contribution to modern science that he made on this, the 200th anniversary of his birth.
(And not forgetting you, too, Mr Lincoln).

Ah! I can hardly wait until tomorrow!

I got a couple-three Chuch Burnin's scheduled early in the a.m., got lunch with the local coven / satanists, then dinner of young succulent Christians, followed by a live re-creation of the Christians vs. Lions. My money's on the Lions for this one!

What's everyone else got going on?

As you well know, the extra time spent Expellin' all the ID Scientists has put me behind the curve for Ebola Spreadn', and I don't think I'm gonna be able to hit quota this year.

However, I am confident that one of us will be able to pick up the slack, especially now that we have B. Hussein Obama as our President.

Happy Birthday Chucky D!

Were he here, I would give Charles a copy of this book because I've enjoyed reading it several times:

Darwin - The Life of a Tormented Evolutionist by Adrian Desmond and James Moore, WW Norton & Co, 1991, ISBN 0-393-31150-3, 808 pages.

When you read about what Darwin did just on the Beagle, it would be enough for one career.  One of his monographs would be enough for one career.  To consider the vast volume of work Darwin produced, handwritten, is remarkable.

He was also ill for a great part of his life.  Watch the worm, puke, watch the worm, puke;  repeat.

Amazing.

Question for the crowd:  If Darwin lived today would he be as prolific, or would he be weighed down in an office writing grant proposals?

Yep, I'm in NZ, but I think k.e. is a Kiwi living in Australia. If he is out on bail I sure hope those bush fires aren't the result of his church burnin' gone wrong. </tastelessness>

Personally I prefer lime, but I wouldn't presume to instruct a person on their choice of jello. Darwinian orgy and puppy kicking parties organised at my place are jello neutral. We accept all flavours of jello as a matter of individual choice. There's many flavours in the jello rainbow, don't be afraid to let your flavours shine.*

Oh and as it is 00:30 am GMT, 12/02/2009 here I'd like to say "Happy Birthday Charles Darwin". Although this is a nice day to celebrate a great scientist, I'll be waiting until later in the year for the 150th anniversary of the publication of Origin. No disrespect to Old Chuck, but the work is more important than the bloke IMO.

DB: He MIGHT be out in the field, but he'd likely still have to deal with the standard bureaucratic crap we've all come to know and loathe. I think he *could* be as prolific, but it'd be difficult. (I'm thinking of like Mayr or E.O Wilson)

I'm only on p.104 of the new Desmond & Moore offering -- haven't had much time to read lately.

It's great info on topics I thought I knew pretty well; we used to have "Darwin Trivia" contests in the anthro/archaeo depts. at my old school and I did okay, but this is a lot of new material to me. I'm taking my time and savoring it. Chucky, you were one of the greats. Te Salutamus.

And to celebrate this day, here's a nice one about speciation:

"A Mexican woodpecker and a Canadian woodpecker were in Mexico arguing about which place had the toughest trees. The Mexican woodpecker claimed Mexico had a tree that no woodpecker could peck.
The Canadian woodpecker accepted his challenge and promptly pecked a hole in the tree with no problem. The Mexican woodpecker was amazed.
The Canadian woodpecker then challenged the Mexican woodpecker to peck a tree in Canada that was absolutely 'impeckable' (a term frequently used by woodpeckers ). The Mexican woodpecker expressed confidence that he could do it and accepted the challenge.
The two flew to Canada where the Mexican woodpecker successfully pecked the so-called 'impeckable' tree almost without breaking a sweat.
Both woodpeckers were now terribly confused. How is it that the Canadian woodpecker was able to peck the Mexican tree, and the Mexican woodpecker was able to peck the Canadian tree, yet neither was able to peck the tree in their own country?
After much woodpecker pondering, they both came to the same conclusion:

Apparently, your pecker gets harder when you're away from home "

I don't think you've given us all the choices!

Darwin was independently wealthy by the standards of his time. I would imagine that, scaling his Victorian wealth to the value of today, as he would be a multimillionaire by our standards he wouldn't have to write grant proposals. His voyages and studies, whilst extensive, are eminently within the financial reach of a modern day multimillionaire. I think, all things being equal and given modern technology, Darwin would be more productive, not less.

In fact, in my more whimsical moments, I dream of being an independently wealthy "gentleman scientist" in the manner of Darwin and some of his contemporaries and predecessors. I even have a location and building design for my lab planned should miracle strike and I win big on the lottery! Yes, I know this makes me a tragically sad geek, but I don't care. I'd rather spend my (dream) millions on doing something I am truly passionate about (science) rather than squandering it on trivia. Mind you, there would be a few parties about which future generations would tell legends. The two pursuits are not mutually exclusive.

Well, I started off my Darwin celebrations kind of late because I was up late in the service of evolution. It was a night of the usual supression of evidence: catching dinosaurs, faking DNA, expelling ID scientists; nothing out of the ordinary. But what made it especially rough was that NASA found the missing day again so we had to sneak into houses and change all of the clocks and whatnot again. Man, I know those guys don't do anything all day, but they have got to get on the ball. This conspiracy isn't going to hold if we don't all work together.

What with all of the persecution and daily Atheism, I haven't even had time to steal candy from a baby

Billy Crystal: Lou Gehrig. Everybody knows Lou Gehrig. The baseball player. He died of Lou Gehrig's Disease.
Robin Williams: Wow, what are the odds on that?
