Has anyone participated in National Geographic's Genographic project? From cheep swabs it offers genetic testing for both mitochondrial and Y chromosome DNA (for males), and results for deep history geographic roots, and Neanderthat/Denisovan ancestry. The kit was a Christmas present from my wife. Just curious about opinions or experience here...

Here's a little bit more about the kit.

Do it! I am thinking of doing it, especially since deep ancestry and Neanderthal roots was the subject of one of the talks of my DNA Day program at the library, and now that I am writing about genetic genealogy. That kit is not cheap! Nice gift!

I also recommend watching Journey of Man: A Genetic Odyssey. It's available for streaming on Netflix too if YouTube gets taken down.

edit: ("cheek" swabs - not "cheep" swabs)

Thanks, Kristine. The kit's on sale, so I got my wife one too. Not sure how much detail they include, but contributing to their DNA data pool is also satisfying. Too bad the gals don't get their paternal background.

I'll be sure to look for the video on Netflix.

I'm shocked. I'm sure this will be featured at UD.

I joined the project several years ago.

I still get emails announcing "matches" to whatever markers they identified, but I haven't paid much attention to it in recent years.

I had my mind set on making an comment to a subject in a thread here at AtBC that I read just yesterday but today I am not able to find the thread.

I only remember the subject: An opinion about books presenting the author as a Ph.d.

I hope someone may find it for me. In the meantime I'll prepare my response.

he used the devastating 'how come no monkey's still turning into no humans?' line of argument. Thousands of scientists can be expected to resign within days and go on long, soul-searching benders.

There's an exodus from academia to the mountains in search of a guru.

The search has become so competitive that candidates have koaned themselves to death. :(

G'bye, Mabus.

To everyone else, please don't reply to Mabus/Markuze.

Sadly, there's no shortage of home-schooled 15-year-olds.  Which I suspect is what you're dealing with.

There are still quite a few running around down here.  I get more that are agnostic on age but firmly insist on a literal Adam and Eve, ye Olde Flood, etc.

That would include all Catholics.

Not in my experience.

There's a revanchist element of RCs who long for the days of Bells 'n Smells before *shudder* Vat II and the dreaded Guitar Mass, but even most of them disdain the OECs as only slightly less primitive than the snake-waving Appalachian types of Pentecostals.

And then there are the hard-core Pio Nono types who want to throw the entire Enlightenment out the window, but even they don't do the Literalism thang. How can you revere Aquinas - who, remember, managed to replace nearly the entire Bible with the collected works of Aristotle - while taking that ridiculous Genesis business literally? At most, RCs of any persuasion will insist on the literal truth of the Gospels, and are happy to take the rest with a Siberia of salt.

Of course, we have Densye, who proclaims her Catholicism nearly as loudly as her rejection of Emmanuel Goldstein Darwin and all his pomps. As a survivor of Vincentian and Jesuit education, I can assure you that that is only the pernicious influence of the colonies a rather too loud affirmation of loyalty to All Those Cool Guys. Even the most obnoxious of the bishops cringe when they have to be seen with her and her type

No true Catholic can doubt a literal Adam and Eve, even if they aren't the first people. They would be the first to receive souls.

Hmmm. Well it is true that Humani Generis says so, but you won't find many West European RCs (even the practising ones that are still left) who would openly agree with it. As I recall, the usual view (bearing in mind that I haven't seen the inside of a church since the FSM was a noodle) is along the lines that this guy discusses. It ain't gonna get an Imprimatur any time soon, but it is far more representative of 'real' Catholic opinion than Pio XII's diktat in 1950.

Think of it like contraception: the 'true' Catholic says one thing: the 'real' Catholics do the opposite.

It's pretty lively around my place tonight. There are cops swarming all over the area. I called 911 to see what's going on but they wouldn't tell me anything except that the area is "surrounded" and that the cops would be around all night. Several cops were walking through my yard more than once, shining flashlights around my yard and other nearby yards, and taking pictures (with flash) of one of my neighbors' home and yard. Most of the cops aren't in uniforms and are driving/riding in a minivan or SUV although there are the usual black and white cop cars nearby too.

I need to move out of this crappy neighborhood. :)
