I am about 50 miles from the apparent epicenter (redundancy intentional). There was a good 3 second separation between the s and p waves.

The dog was sound asleep.

Ermmm...I didn't even notice it, really. Haha. http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsus/Quakes/ci10410337.php

Thank you, Bushmills whiskey!

ETA: It looks like it was on the Newport-Inglewood-Rose Canyon fault zone:  http://quake.wr.usgs.gov/recenteqs/FaultMaps/118-34.htm

It was a false alarm. The rumbling and gaseous emissions were a product of Deadman's intestinal forces acting on last nights chile. Scientists are checking his sheets for residue, but the zone is expected to remain toxic for some time.

There goes another little quake, 3:50 PM PDS.

The funniest thing the other night was that the quake awoke a crow roost that took several minutes to settle back down.

The preliminary data is this is a magnitude 4.1 after-shock.

I did not feel the 2.5 quake a few minutes later.

Not too long after moving to San Diego, Diane and I were awakened about 4 AM to the hawks moving around their mews in an agitated fashion. I checked the yard, but didn't see any raccoons, possums, or other intruders, and so went back to bed.

In the morning, we got a call from my dad asking whether the earthquake woke us up.

The first quake shut down a couple of our pipelines due to pump vibration.  Even a couple of pumps that were not running at the time.  That's pretty impressive.  Nothing on the aftershock, though.

Interesting. What is the trigger? A mercury switch to a capacitor?

Depends on the pump.  Smaller ones have accelerometers (spelling - who knows?) mounted on the case that are usually integrated to give a velocity output. Inches per second being the most common.

The bigger pumps, like 5,000 HP, usually go with magnetic proximity probes that actually measure the shaft movement.  Usually in thousandths of an inch.

Any reading above the alarm limit is routed through the electronic controls for the circuit breaker, or a mechanical relay, and that throws the breaker.

Probably could a decent reading on quake magnitude from these if I could get the historical data...

I know, more than you ever wanted to know.  Earthquakes can be fun from about 2000 miles away.
