From Daily Kos, July 31, 2009:

QUESTION: Do you believe that America and Africa were once part of the same continent?

YES, NO, NOT SURE

ALL 42% 26% 32%

DEM 51% 16% 33%
REP 24% 47% 29%
IND 44% 23% 33%
OTH/REF 42% 25% 33%
NON VOTERS 46% 22% 32%

Republicans flunked the science question, whereas everyone else passes. Regionally, the South didn't do that well either.

NORTHEAST 50% 18% 32%
SOUTH 32% 37% 31%
MIDWEST 46% 22% 32%
WEST 43% 24% 33%

What are they teaching in science class these days? And isn't it amazing that regions and parties have their own facts? Perhaps we should ask how old the earth is, or whether the real life Fred Flintstone had a dinosaur as a pet.

Plate tectonics is a myth. Micro-groundmoves (which I accept) don't add up to Macro-groundmoves. Why have they never been witnessed, eh?

I'm not surprised that Republicans are less science literate, but 51% hardly seems like passing.

I bet that few of the people who hold the "correct" opinion could justify it with a line of evidence.

MORE SCIENCE ILLITERACY

I did not know if i was going to put this on the bathroom wall or make new topic but this topic seemed ideal(thank you Dr GH).

NPR news had a story by Julie Rovner about the health insurance bill this morning.  The compromise on the bill that was just worked out between the so-called 'blue dog' democrats and the more liberal democrats included extending patent rights to pharmaceutical companies "for expensive biotech drugs made from molecules rather than chemicals."*  Who would have ever guessed they were different?

*Yes I know it would have been too complicated to explain precisely what was meant by that phrase but the fact that too many Americans would not have been able to understand it anyway is why and that is sort of the point.

(The story is the second one in the program stream @~50 sec)

Seems they aren't teaching plate tectonics Gary.

The thing that's really depressing is that a majority of Americans haven't a clue about the subject, with most either saying no to the question, or stating they weren't sure (except for the Northeast which was 50%).

This type of thing should be mandatory post primary school science. It was when I was at that stage, and that was 40 years ago.

......erm time moves the same in each case for ob1 [you] riding & ob2 where ever....

I think you mean if a clock is on a photon, time moves rather than other photons moving that is  only their clocks move.

I could go along with that however it would be much easier just to give a separate time geo-address in time for all space and just comment on the flow of density.

To calculate future energy and or density of an insulator and or conductor set an arb. Time zero and total the calculation at some future point in time.

Send results to Dembsky and ask him how much god charges for yesterday.

Speaking of scientific illiteracy.

Hello people, long time, no posting.

I've many "antis" at my work site.  One of the biggest "anti" is Global Warming.  Is there a good website to use as a resource for the "Heat Islands of cities skewing the results", "Solar Cycles mean the Earth is cooling", etc?

Yes, I live in the South.

After teaching science for five years in Texas... it's not really the kids fault, it's the dumb*ss school board members and State Board of Education.

Two years ago, I had a 'talking to' from my principle about teaching evolution (in Biology Class!).  I had to explain to her that evolution is one of the science standards that we are required by law to teach.

It is really depressing.

I wonder if the heat from cities is really all that negligible on a planet wide scale, or is that a significant factor?

I think the argument runs that a lot of weather stations in the US were out in the countryside originally and eventually the nearest city has grown to be near them so that the readings are now affected by the Urban heating effect.
This argument in itself has been refuted and also ignores all of the other ways that climate has been measured.

The same thing happened to me.  The principal was more trying to avoid flak from the parents than actually disagreeing with me, but that's exactly the type of cowardice that makes our jobs harder.  That made it much easier for me to change schools the next year.

Where 'bouts?  I taught in Port Arthur and Sabine Pass.  Hurricanes ran me off.

It's one of the main reasons I quit teaching.  I can teach great, I just can't deal with idiots.  And I sure as heck can't stand a kid who looks at me and says, "I don't care what the evidence is, I won't learn it."  Then I get in trouble for failing him.

I've been in a couple of the smaller districts in the Lufkin area.  There's quite a bit of lazy creationist teaching (really nothing more sophisticated than evolution=atheist, I didn't come from no monkey) going on a home/church, but quite a few of the kids have aha moments when they finally get to see actual evidence.  My favorite reaction is when they realize I'm not just saying we're related to apes, but to fish and bacteria even further back.

Yeah, there's critters out there a lot more undesirable as distant relatives than monkeys and apes (e.g., any parasite you care to name). Besides, primates at least have pretty much the same parts as us, just in different proportions.

I once showed my kids a video about a group of chimpanzees that got it in their heads to beat the crap out of one of their own group.  Ended up beating the chimp to death.  Then left the body laying hanging from a low branch.

Quite a few kids in that particular school had a learning experience that day.  Even a few of the gang bangers had a real think on that one.

Thank you so much.
