I don't see my response to Dave on the other thread, so I am posting it here:

You're a riot, Robert.

to everybody who's having problems with that updating on AFDave's thread, here's how you get around it. When you go to AtBC, you're at this page:
Code Sample
http://www.antievolution.org/cgi-bin/ikonboard/ikonboard.cgi?act=SF;f=14

when you go to an AtBC thread, you get something like
Code Sample
http://www.antievolution.org/cgi-bin/ikonboard/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=14;t=1958

that t=1958 part at the end is the thread number. When you click on a page, like page 41, you get this

Code Sample
http://www.antievolution.org/cgi-bin/ikonboard/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=14;t=1958;st=1200

that st=1200 part means throw away the first 1200 comments, and don't show any comments higher than 1230. If there have been 1202 comments on the thread, and you click on the link and it has st=1200, you get a page with only comments 1201 and 1202 on them. sometimes, whatever updates the page 41 / 1200 numbers doesn't kick in after the next thirty comments, and in this for instance, you'll see, on the AtBC page, a link going to page 40 (st=1170) even though there've now been over thirty comments past comment 1170. So you see only comments 1170-1200, even though you've already seen them. So the solution is this--if you know there are updated comments beyond what it's showing you, go to the last page it will give you. click on the URL in that field of the browser, and manually add thirty to the number. In this case, you'd change
Code Sample
http://www.antievolution.org/cgi-bin/ikonboard/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=14;t=1958;st=1170

to
Code Sample
http://www.antievolution.org/cgi-bin/ikonboard/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=14;t=1958;st=1200

and then it'll take you to the hidden page.

Why does that only happen on AFDave's thread?

I wondered that too, but was afraid to ask in case the answer was obvious to people more computer-literate than myself. :(

Some Southern Baptist curse?

it's a combination of the overall size of the thread, combined with any particularly large post that might appear on a given page.

it causes a delay until the whole page is filled with posts, then they all appear at once.

I think Wes mentioned this in the mechanics thread.

Other threads have done it in smaller amounts. I haven't really cared to investigate what causes it since there's a workaround. And I have very limited powers, there's a good chance I don't have access to the necessary information in the first place. Wesley is by all accounts an extremely busy person and so I'm not about to ask him to investigate a minor annoyance we all know how to work around. I've been thinking about starting a new thread, AFDave Part II. As a fresh thread, it would begin life where the last one left off, minus the accumulated problems which cause that bug. But there are downsides to having the same conversation split into two parts. Any thoughts from you guys?

As you've seen, there are a lot of lurkers daily checking in to AFDave's thread to read the funnies. Many of us have been following this since the beginning. I don't think it would hurt anything to start a "volume 2" of the thread. It takes a long time to load, and I've had numerous instances of waiting for a long time to read the latest postings. Those who rely on showing Dave his previous words to stymie a claim know where to go in the thread to get them.

Plus, it might make him mad when his "greatest thread of all time" doesn't make it past the UD thread for number of pages. I'm for it! :)  :)  :)  :)

I became a lurker as a result of the AFDAVE stuff on Google.  Before you "split" the thread, ask someone who has some SEO experience how that would affect things.

First I'll ask someone what "SEO" means.

HA!  Now you know how I feel when people talk about paleosols.  SEO is jargon for Search Engine Optimization--sorry to use jargon.

Paleosols are an interesting topic. I had a class in Earth Geochemistry (none of my technical electives were done in physics) and I remember a few things. C3 and C4 plants, mostly. But nothing like the level of expertise shown by the people who beat up on AFDave, so I leave it to them.

Fine with me to start a new one ... call it "AFDave's Creator God Hypothesis Part 2"

It's also fine with me to start a separate one called "AFDave on Christianity in Western Civilization" since that topic comes up alot.

BTW ... my computer basically crashes every time I try to download "ALL" on my 200 page thread ...

Any hints for downloading it successfully?  I would like to be able to search it.

Try locking the old thread and leaving a link to the new one as the last post.

try using a browser such as opera, where you can disable images. This should reduce the overall size of the thread to something a bit more manageable.
Then you can search through and create permalinks to the answers you've already given eh? :)

also, it seems to be possible to right click on the "all" option and do a "save as". It will then write out the entiure thread to a off-line html file. At least, this thread did anyway. It'll be called something like ikonboard.htm and it'll take a while!
