A leading architect of the intelligent-design movement defended his ideas in a federal courtroom on Tuesday and acknowledged that under his definition of a scientific theory, astrology would fit as neatly as intelligent design.

Personally, I have always thought there was far more evidence supporting Astrology than there is supporting ID.  :D

Captain Midnight ... still putting a little crank in your ovaltine I see. Lets take that unbiased NYT article as purely objective. LOL

Oh! And if you'd like a small wager on the outcome of this trial... I'm game.

Are you guys going to be the pall bearers for Lenny after he takes the pipe when your cult loses?

Its the least you could do after egging him on over such a hopeless cause.

Oooh, a friendly wager.

I'm definitely in.  What are the terms and stakes?

Don't trust the NYT? Here's another account of the testimony from the local paper:

Quote

Eric Rothschild, attorney for the plaintiffs, asked Behe about whether astrology was science. And Behe, after hemming and hawing and launching into an abbreviated history of astrology and science, said, under his definition, it is.

And, oh god, I wish there was a reliable way to bet on this trial. Anyone who thinks the judge is going to do anything other than rip the school board to shreds.. is seriously delusional. This ruling will not be pretty.

Here's the bet,

Anyone who replies and accepts, regardless of any appeal, has to write a post admitting they lost the bet.

Then they have to honestly resign from this forum under any and all names for a period of thirty calendar days.

I will be lonely posting to no one.

I bet that Judge Jones rules in favor of the plaintiffs.  And I raise the bet to include permanent exile from this forum.  Care to take that bet, Evopeach?

i'll take that bet, and raise it again:

not only does the loser have to admit they lost, but they must grovel and beg for forgiveness for being so pig ignorant to have ever doubted the outcome to begin with.

Now I wonder if you would care to read what Behe said?

How do we konw the court reporter isn't a evil Evo?!  I'm sure we should take it as a COMPLETELY UNBAISED report.  Ha!

(Sorry, just trying on an Evopeach costume, in the spirit of the upcoming Halloween.)

The funny thing about reading those transcripts is that it's hard to tell if it's direct testimony or cross. He sounds equally buffonish both ways.

You're on Evopeach.

I bet on a win for the plaintiffs. (ID to lose, in case you weren't sure.)

Cogzoid :    Because the court reporter actually has a skill, a brain, can read and write and doesn't need a herd of people standing around pumping her up and telling her how smart she is. In other words she is not a butthead evo like you.

Where did you get this information?  What are your sources?

By the way, did you read the testimony?  Did you see where ol' Behe agrees that astrology fits under his definition of science?  Did you see what he considers "rigorous peer review"?  I'm curious as to what you have to say about those comments.  I'd love for you to explain how a 10 minute phone call was rigorous.

Behe claimed 5 reviewers looked at DBB before publication. Atcheson and the 10 minute phonecall, we know about. Robert Shapiro damns the book with faint praise here (and promises a fuller explanation soon) here

And now a third reviewer has spoken here.

This kind of stuff is why I get physically ill anytime they associate Behe with Lehigh. (I went to Lehigh) Of course the statement from the biology department made me feel better. It does real damage to the university's name.

Well you and other alumni can write a letter or do something to let the school know how you feel. Behe's presence is probably putting off potential Bio students (or any science students in general) from going to or even applying to Lehigh.

Perhaps you can withhold donations to the school. If you get enough of your fellow alumni to follow your lead, you might get the university to remove Behe. I think that, in extenuating circumstances, you can overrule tenure and get rid of someone.

I'm not technically an alum. I went there for 3 years, then transfered to Penn State..

BUT the Biology department did post a page on their web site distancing themselves from ID and Behe. Hopefully that helps.

Unfortunately, Lehigh's alumni is largely conservative. They probably have no problem with Behe's statements or at best are indifferent.

Did evopeach ever admit defeat?  Did he admit he lost the bet?

And speaking of Behe, he also admitted on Hannity and Colmes that the intelligent designer could be a space alien or time traveler.

Behe is a real humdinger of a credit to modern scientific thinking, no?  Why just the other day I was having coffee with a space alien friend of mine who was telling me about his time traveling pals from a distant galaxy.  I asked him if he or his time travel pals designed mankind and he said he wasn't sure but suspected it might have been Klingons.

Well, I guess in a sense he/she accepted the "permanent banishment" bet  :D

I do remember when evo was banned; he said some very naughty things (foul language included), and was promptly tossed.

anybody can appeal their banishment.

in any case, why not ask him to follow the terms of his own wager?

we have far too many trolls on PT as it is, and Larry is far more humorous than evo ever was.

I have mentioned it on on the Ken Miller thread over at PT.
