I just watched the speech given by Eugenie Scott when she received the Stephen Jay Gould prize. Extremely helpful for me was her model of explaining why "silly evolutionists always change their theory to fit new results". She presented a system of Core Science, Frontier Science, and Fringe Science. Core Science hardly changes with new results, Frontier Science presents and tests new hypotheses which may or may not be fruitful, and Fringe Science just might get lucky; her example was Plate Tectonics - and ID if it ever bothers to do research.

Seaworld, myself, and my family have all survived the weekend.  Once I can face the effort, I've got some great shots to put up.

We went to one of the 'animal ambassador' shows, which is where the staff brings out some animals and talks about them.  My boy and an Indian child (about 7) got into a competition about who could answer the most questions correctly.  The other boy probably won, but I was very proud of my child.

The Mayan calendar is scheduled to roll over on December 21.  But it may not get the chance if José Luis de Jésus Miranda is right and the world actually ends on June 30.

My favorite comment on this issue was when Dick Clark died.

Since, it's obvious that we can no longer "ring in the new year"... it will be 2012 forever now.

I used to read Sendak's books. They were kinda cool and a bot more 'grown up" than Dr. Seuss.

Speaking of "grow up" reading. I don't know why exactly but I have kinda lost interest in PT. For the most part it seems that the only people writing good informative stuff are RBH, PZM, and perhaps a few others. Not much interest in the comments once the usual trolls show up.... just gets repetitive.

RBH and Mike Elzinga are always good commenters that actually add tot he discussion but the rest are really dull. Sometimes Kw*k is good for a  guffaw but only about one in fifty.

An obituary.

Since his last blogpost, I was kind of expecting such an outcome. But not this soon.

John, you were a big pain in the ass at times, I will not deny you that. But circumstances were not easy on you either. I hope you at least enjoyed your last weeks among your familly and loved ones, and I offer to them all my sympathies.

I'll raise one to JAD.

A sad passing. I assume we'll never hear an "O captain, my captain" from VMartin, his Slovakian lapdog.

I tried to take him seriously at UD. It didn't work.

Hi Kristine,
I'm glad your event was a success; did the local media cover it?

And *ahem* may I enquire about the fate of another article?  Methinks it was to be available for the hoi polloi sooner or later.
Quote (Kristine @ Dec. 22 2011,16:22)
Whoo-hoo! My article is finally indexed online! Need subscription, though. :) (Second one down.)

The news and community centers picked up our press release. Lynn Fellman's presentation was partially filled so that we can produce a short video about the program (I took stills of the other events), and I already have plans for next year.

What was the other article?

The article is about conspiracy theories, iirc.
And now I'm looking forward to the video, too.

Oh, it's the same one. Pardonnez-moi for essentially liveblogging about everything that transpires about this article - I'm just very excited about it, and now being mentioned on the SI website. But it's not available online, unless you use a database such as Gale, Expanded Academic ASAP, InfoTrac, Science in Context, etc.

Someone emailed me and I suggested that he send his comments as a letter to the editor (which now appears in the May/June issues of SI), and it turns out that he worked in the NASM archives along with the people I worked with!

I must say, Dembski is out of his mind, not publishing and lighting candles in his turret for ID. I have found academic publishing (which does not pay, unlike my earlier pursuits) to be an enormously rewarding experience. Gotta be a lot better than constant helping of well-deserved cold shoulder!

Although I found this on UD I post it here because it isn't really all that much related to it.

News points to an article at Creation Evolution Headlines which gloats about a paper that discusses cave art. They might think it somehow proves their weird idea of entropy.

They quote the introduction of the paper:
Quote
Remarkably agreeing with the radiocarbon dates of the human and animal occupancy, this study confirms that the Chauvet cave paintings are the oldest and the most elaborate ever discovered, challenging our current knowledge of human cognitive evolution.

I went and read the whole paper which discusses the dating only - radio carbon dating resulted in evidence that the artwork really is the oldest found until now; the quality of the paintings had suggested that they might be much younger.

Nowhere in the paper the "current knowledge of human cognitive evolution" is "challenged", and I'm not happy with this claim.

There have been discovered maybe a dozen caves with paintings; can you really infer a development of cognitive abilities from a handful of samples? Maybe some artists were just better than others?

I'm aware of the fact that there are several layers of paintings sometimes added over thousands of years. But not everyone is a brilliant artist, following generations might just have copied what was already there.

Of course, I'm a bloody layperson. Maybe some of you can give an educated opinion.

If anything, this speaks to problems dating by 'stylistic evolution', that is to say cultural traditions. Not cognitive evolution in the sense of change in brain developmental capabilities. The difference in timing is only 10K years, so how much of that was going on, anyway?

The creationists providing the commentary are of course stuck with the problem of accepting the dating premises of the article.

The creationists providing the commentary are of course stuck with the problem of accepting the dating premises of the article.

Traditionally dating cave art has been done by dating artifacts and what not found in the cave - always a somewhat dicey proposition because the artifacts may not be contemporaneous with the paintings. There are a number of other relative techniques that pertain to stylistic and thematic concerns. One can also look at things like datable subject matter (when did the species in the painting evolve - which supplies the earliest date) superimposition of designs, materials used, etc. which are hard to create a regional sequence out of (i.e. cross date sites). There are a number of chronometric techniques involving the amount and chemical composition of the varnish. Finally, there are few methods that involve dating the paint pigment itself, these methods grew out of radiocarbon dating and rely on accelerator mass spectrometry and to a certain extent are works in progress.

What I find amusing is that the CEH guy rejects the radiometric dating but accepts the results - that the more artistics drawings are earlier than the more crudely done artwork. When called on this bit of doublethink by a commenter:

Quote
Buho May 9, 2012

“The point is not whether their calculated dates are correct or not; all dating methods depend on assumptions that cannot be independently verified. The point here is that evolutionary assumptions about the mind of man are 100% off. Cave art started out wonderful and degenerated.”

If we cannot trust the dating methods, how can we know “cave art STARTED OUT wonderful”? Maybe they are late paintings after all but the dating methods are all unreliable.

the CEH guy dodges the issue:
