That shit hurts.  In my time as a chem student I got a lot of things spilled on me, but by far the worst was the H2O2 they used in the archaeology lab my wife worked in.

When the PI in whose lab I worked 10 yrs ago found out I was cleaning SiOx chips with Hot Piranha Solution, in other words this on a hot plate, he was, let's say, less than relaxed and soft-spoken.  :p

The school I taught at had a number of students who... shall we say... were a few fries short of a Happy Meal.

One of our chemistry teachers (an amazing optimist) was doing an experiment with sodium hydroxide. One of his students boiled the stuff, then GRABBED IT WITH HIS HAND to take it off the bunsen burner.

Needless to say, the boy dropped the beaker, which shattered and splashed him with boiling sodium hydroxide. The boy is African American. He now has some very white spots on his hands and lower face.

Sheesh. That would have been stupid even if the beaker had contained only hydrogen monoxide...

My favorite cautionary tale involves a student I had while working as a TA in grad school.  She was wearing her safety goggles on top of her head rather than over her eyes, so I pantomimed pulling them down to the proper position.  She reached up with a beaker in her hand and poured the entire thing over her head.  Luckily it was some dilute salt solution we were using for a lab on conductivity.  Nearly two decades later, I still use that story in my safety lessons.

Don't remember where, but I remember reading a study somewhere about the neurotoxicity of H2O2 and the associated deleterious effects.

It would explain a lot of Joe's base stupidity.

RichTARD Hughes, Still a Physics FAILure
-
For whatever reason RichTARD Hughes is still hung up on his huge physics FAIL with respect to, get this, a universe that had only one star and one orbiting planet that also had an orbiting moon. Yes he pulled it from his ass because that is all he had to try to make some retarded point.

Richie thought what I said was wrong-

For ONE, the earth/ moon system would fall into the Sun without any counter-balance- we need that external pull to help keep us in place.

That counter-balance is called EXPANSION, without which said universe would collapse on itself. That means the planet/moon system would spiral or even just straight fall right into the star. Even this universe will start collapsing, if it hasn't already, once the expansion stops. And a universe with only one star with a planet moon system in orbit wouldn't have enough stuff to keep it expanding. That is another point-; RichTARD's universe could never exist in the first place.

He should be thinking this:

instead of this:

Teh stupid, it hurts.

Joe's attempt to pin stability of the solar system on the expansion of the Universe makes no sense. The expansion is only noticeable over cosmological (i.e., very large) distances.

Hubble's empirical law tells us that two points separated by 1 megaparsec move away from each other at a speed of 68 km/s. Earth is 5 microparsecs away from Sun. The expansion of space between them occurs at a speed of 0.3 micron per second. Utterly inconsequential.

Write that down, Joe. Better yet, learn that a planet orbiting a star does not need anything to balance the star's gravity. It will keep orbiting the star and won't fall into it.

To throw Joe a bone to choke himself with, didn't Planck speculate that inertia has something to do with the background of distant objects?

We need other stars to stop the moon hitting us and us hitting the sun

That would be Ernst Mach.
Quote

Mach's principle says that this is not a coincidence—that there is a physical law that relates the motion of the distant stars to the local inertial frame. If you see all the stars whirling around you, Mach suggests that there is some physical law which would make it so you would feel a centrifugal force. There are a number of rival formulations of the principle. It is often stated in vague ways, like "mass out there influences inertia here". A very general statement of Mach's principle is "Local physical laws are determined by the large-scale structure of the universe."

This concept was a guiding factor in Einstein's development of the general theory of relativity. Einstein realized that the overall distribution of matter would determine the metric tensor, which tells you which frame is rotationally stationary. Frame dragging and conservation of gravitational angular momentum makes this into a true statement in the general theory in certain solutions. But because the principle is so vague, many distinct statements can be (and have been) made which would qualify as a Mach principle, and some of these are false.

You know, I was just thinking, this moron claims to have a pilot's license. Surely he understands slips and slides when turning and banking in a plane...

That's centripetal force too.

I just checked the FAA, interestingly, they have a searchable database of pilot certifications... anyone want to take a guess at who I didn't find?

It occurs to me that tidal friction might not be exactly zero, and could well take a really long time to do anything, and I don't know if in this case it would produce a pull or a push. (In the case of the moon around Earth, it's a push. )

But I see no indication that tidal friction is what he was talking about; actually I saw indications to the contrary.
