$0.00 is the price you pay if you subscribe to the new KindleUnlimited service for $9.99 a month.  That ten-spot gives you free access to "over 600,000" books.

If this is an example of those books, Amazon is not going to sell very many KindleUnlimited memberships.

Nah, they've got some good stuff in there.  Cat's Cradle, Animal Farm, Lord Of The Rings, all sorts of actual science writing, plenty of literary classics, etc.

Speaking of loons, has UD gotten any new posters of late? Or are the cast of UD denizens pretty much the same folks who have been there for awhile?

yeah, they have a few people--they recently let BA77 hisself put up a post. And their posting rate is daily, but it's just the same dreck over and over again....Here's some science but we really predicted it....here's some atheists, aren't they terrible...it's hard to get enthusiastic about visiting.

I always thought that Kentucky was a recipe for chicken batter.

Yeah, I haven't been there in quite some time; nothing worth so much as a chuckle imho.

But my question was whether they have some new commentors besides StephenB, BA77, Arrington, Mapou, Vincent, Gordon, etc. Have they attracted any new admirers, so-to-speak?

I dunno. IIRC, Maryland and most of Delaware are south of that line, and Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois extend south of it. Not to mention West Virginia (most of it, anyway).

The important thing to know about the Mason-Dixon Line is that you cannot find decent Mexican food north of it.

This has always been my favorite Sal post:

When i hear Pinker is noted I feel violent. He is a Jewish racist if there is racism.
anyways violence has been declining since christianity took hold relative to numbers of mankind. the protestant reformation made the most protestant peoples, us, the most non violent.

by the way violence is overblown in the old days.
I remember a roman writer talking about the lack of wars so much it was like dream to him there ever were wars.
anyways the violence of the past is a myth of poor sampling methods.

I think Sal's position as a "finance person" is a lot closer to the cash register than the front office.

On second thought, I can't see anybody trusting him with a cash register.  Jesus is likely to order him to take the contents to the local casino and increase it ten-fold at the blackjack table.  "Don't worry, son, you can't fail.  God is on your side."

He probably works in a call center taking complaints about a bank's service.

Are you any relation to the nobel prize winner Clinton Davisson of Davisson-Germer fame? My professor James Trefil while teaching at UVa used the same office as Clinton Davisson. Trefil’s desk still desk had the periodic table taped to it years earlier by Clinton Davisson.

Bet prof Trefil is so proud of Sal's beliefs as to half lives.

It's probably related to the creationist claim that they don't exist - they're really Homo sapiens with unusual skeletons (and/or the curse of Ham).  The Neanderthal stories she posts are usually about how sophisticated they were.

Or it's just a subset of her ongoing "Scientists learned something new, therefore Jesus" series.

Looks like Bully Arrington has taken the banhammer to Rich after only two posts:

This was added to Rich's second:

UD Editors: Rich, you are boring us. It does not appear that you have anything substantive to add to this post. BTW, I suggested that you “write that down” as a way to emphasize my point that spewing snarky banalities is not a substitute for saying something intelligent. Even so, apparently you did not get the message.

Yep. Catholic Catechism:
Quote
An unnatural sexual act is any type of sexual act that is not unitive and procreative. Examples of unnatural sexual acts include oral sexual acts, anal sexual acts, and manipulative sexual acts (i.e. masturbation of self or of another). All unnatural sexual acts are intrinsically evil and always gravely immoral because these acts lack the unitive and procreative meanings, which are required by God for sexual acts to be moral ..... The use of contraception deprives the act of natural intercourse of the procreative meaning, causing the sexual act to be non-procreative. The use of contraception is intrinsically evil...

I wonder how they determine the gender of hermaphrodites - and other in betweens, physical or psychological?

Would perhaps be a good idea for churches to issue gender certificates at confirmation, Bar Mitzwah or something?

I take some pleasure that Barry lives in a state that:

1)Legalized it, to no ill effect but big tax $. Whole industrial parks of Denver smell sweetly skunky. Hope his bill collection office* is downwind from a growhouse.
2) Gave free/low-cost birth control out, and had a massive decrease in teen pregnancy and abortion.

3) Is soon to have gay marriage.
