Hi Schroedinger's Dog, I hope you are strong enough to celebrate.

It doesn't help when you have people banned after posting a comment asking for evidence (or in the latest, being asked to give evidence that Paula Kirby is not anti-feminist, then being banned before any more comments could be made).

Did this happen recently?    O_O

I read that earlier today here and it looks accurate.  Can't say about the banning, but if you read what was written, as well as the response (note that it took one minute from "do you have data" to "it's a troll comment, F-off!" (21, 23,24).  Also interesting is Ophelia's last comment (34) where she equates feminism with her particular version of it.  I thought Paula Kirby's efforts (in her doc and her work on conferences with women speakers, I can find the tweet if needed) spoke more in favor of her work as pro-feminist.  Reading that thread is revolting.  It's like creationists in action - believe you have all the evidence you need and ignore anything else that is contrary to your position.  The one who claims to be banned didn't sound like troll comments to me.

ETA: the original FfTB link, which can be found through the first link, is also here

This seems to be what ERVers are made of. Evil people:

Someone posted this to me on a forum, and somehow it is the most touching message I've ever received.

"I'm sorry, this comment is totally OT, but I see Phil is online and I wanted to make a comment to him.

I have a son who's autistic, with several other overlapping diagnoses including sensory integration disorder. Lights, sounds, touch...anything can send him into a "fit" (for lack of a better word). During this time he can hurt himself or others. When he was younger we tried EVERYTHING, my wife is a professional who deals with these kids everyday and he was the most severe she'd seen. We were at our wits end. Brushing teeth, showering...all were traumatic.

And then one day a friend asked if we had tried heavy metal music. I didn't understand why I would, but he convinced me to give it a go. It was like a GODSEND (if you'll pardon the expression). He'd crank it while in the shower and for some reason all his sensory problems would be masked. He now wears earphones when he'[s out-and-about, with metal music playing and he's a different person (this was all some time ago, but now he's twenty and still relies on metal to get him through the day). I even convinced his boss to allow the earphones at work (he works in a warehouse).

So why am I bringing this up to you? Well, the downside of all this is...I don't really appreciate heavy metal (or most of it anyway). So while he was showering, I'd be cringing. When I first read you posts on ERV, I looked at your music and decided to give it a shot. I bought one of your earlier CDs and my son loved it. He's now a big fan, not only of Fairyland but other groups in your genre. The best part is, I like it too. So the house is now a happier place for everyone. I just wanted to thank you for your art and your (even though you were unaware) contribution to my son's therapy. Thank you.

Sorry everyone for posting off-topic, I've just been meaning to say this to Phil for a while now."

And yes, I am very proud of this post and will post it everywhere I can. It seems I did make some kind of difference for some people. Pride, I has it! But also joy and a nice feeling of not being a selfish twit.

I wonder how atheists fare in polytheistic cultures, or if the definition of atheism changes.

There's always India, where there have long been tensions between a polytheistic religion and a monotheistic one. Religions seem to become (or perhaps always are) signifiers of tribal identity, so an atheist is almost by definition an apostate. (Consider the old Belfast joke: "But is he a Catholic atheist or a Protestant one?")*

And then there is Socrates, who was sentenced to die for (among other things) "denying the gods of the city", though it strikes me that they would just as likely have strung him up for littering or double parking if they could have.

* Another venerable Belfast joke: Two ducks are swimming along Belfast Lough, and one says "Quack quack!". The other replies "Ay'm gawn iz quack iz ay cawn!"

RIP Frank Carson.

My understanding is that Hindus actually consider themselves monotheists, however, and that their pantheon is an expression of The One.

I do believe that the "gods" charge for Socrates was trumped up, as well.

We don't have a history of atheism, really. I wonder if there have been Native American or Polynesian "atheists" or nonbelievers.

Well there are at least two major flavors of religion: revealed and mystical.

Mystical tends toward introspection rather than creed.

The writings of revealed religion, as far back as they go, are full of rants against pagans and doubters.

Personally I am an unaffiliated mystical non-believer. I am skeptical of organized anti-religion. If there were a group that shared my beliefs I would change mine.

Well said. I would not change my "beliefs" (insomuch as I have any) in response to their being popular but I am leery of group behavior in general.

Atheism is just a foundation. It is not much in itself, certainly not a "religion"  or a "worldview." I think it is ridiculous to have one "worldview" when the world is a multiplicity of ecosystems, cultures, and possibilities. I do not see others taking an atheist identity where I am going - trying to understand the entanglement of biological evolution and culture, for example, or trying to understand how evolutionary theory can inform archival theory. I see a lack of introspection and a veering toward conformity, and I have never been able to conform to any group, anywhere.

My lack of belief in gods is no more a "foundation" for me than my lack of belief in unicorns. It's just not an issue. I listen to my Christian friends the same way I listen to my new-age pseudo-wiccan flakery friends: they can believe any damn fool thing they want.

Savour the moment! Sorry to learn about the medical stuff. The human body does tend to run down in inconvenient ways.

I don't see the down-side of debate over feminism, except where censorship gets involved. That Ophelia Benson feels she has to dismiss and delete comments defending the views of Paula Kirby of whom I know nothing other than her open letter linked above suggests a sub-text that has deep roots. That a group of disparate people all once united in opposing ID-creationism and are now at each others throats is encouraging in that ID-creationism as a ploy for advancing right wing fundamentalist Christianity is leaving a void that allows disussion of other issues.

Niqab, anyone? ;)

Paula is a very charming person who did (and still does) a lot for Atheism and Skepticism. Her letter was spot on with regard to what's going on in certain parts of the Blogosphere.

And she's very funny, too. Just go to her FB page :) BTW, she's the person to contact if anyone wants to volunteer for the RDF. I did, in my limited ways.

I am very sorry to not posting here as much as usual. Between health and the Slymepit, I don't have many relevant things to say right now. Just rest assured I love you people (yes, even Louis).

I don't understand the US A/S online community anymore. I posted a comment on J&M's latest cartoon, and even that got deleted. It was an innocuous "Benson is definitely not the inspiration for the Barmaid".

There's something I must be doing US-wrong.

The Author has done a cartoon mocking the over the top reaction to elevatorgate so he is probably sympathetic.

He probably doesn't want to start a war in the comments by naming names.

Hmmmm...not sure how I did that?  Did God speak to you telling you that he would demand I eat human babies?  If not, His moral authority is not in question.  I also mentioned that He'd have to give me a thorough explanation as to *why* I must "eat human babies".

still makes me chuckle...

I wonder if PZ has damaged his position in the wider atheist community. PZ is popular but he is nowhere near people like Dawkins, Hinch and many others.

If PZ was in a business and I was his manager, whether he was right or wrong, the fact that he is constantly denigrating collegues rather than trying to solve issues would be a huge black mark.

That's some seriously paranoid shit, not that being paranoid makes it untrue.

But I've seen these techniques used by all sides in both trivial and important discussions. I would go nuts if I thought every forum disruptor was a paid agent.
