(But kissing is pretty common in Ecuador.)

No doubt.  Whence Ecuadorians in the first place.

Though I'm sure that any loyal Ecuadorian would say that their kisses are far beyond the merely "common."

I suppose this could also explain why the Ecuadorians have now become so populous as to require coastal guarding...

It was once of those cheek kisses:
Quote
Here’s a basic guideline to avoid those awkward moments. If you are introduced to someone in a business or formal you should shake hands and again when you say good-bye. When you meet even a casual acquaintance again it's good for you to shake hands both on greeting and parting. Women kiss on the right cheek only. If you are quick to hold out your right hand you can avoid kissing. Kissing is used to show a personal relationship and is given as a sign of trust. When kissing someone as a greeting is usually done by making a kissing sound near the right cheek rather than actually kissing the cheek.

But he actually kissed the cheek. On the deck, under the stars.

What a player! :) No, it was very sweet.

I noticed in the thread on Falwell that you were surprised about the connection to the Moonies.

did you know that Jonathan Wells is a Mooney?

Yup.

his entire graduate career at Berkeley (which overlapped with mine, btw) was entirely funded by Rev. Moon.

bet you now are wondering why the DI loves him so much?

that tent of theirs is awfully large, ain't it.

Well, we are trying to help them slim down... so the tent won't have to be as large.

Yup, I did. But what surprised me was that Falwell took $$$ from Moon. There's no logic in what Falwell found acceptable and unacceptable. Well, I guess that 's not surprising.

I tried to ask at UD what thought Dr. Dr. of Wells' HIV denialism and DaveScot told me I was "off-topic."

In the panga on the way back to the ship, I noticed a star in the sky and asked if it was Jupiter. Richard said that it was Venus (sorry, Richard, I still think it was Jupiter)

I know this is kind of late, but if you could remember about when and in what direction it was, I can probably tell you.

Jupiter is up pretty early now, but in March it was rising after midnight, at least thats what I remember (I'm an amature astronomer). I didn't get out much in May, so I don't remember - but I can look it up.

Venus is easily the brightest thing in the night sky, aside from the moon, and has been for a few months. If what you saw was towards the sunset, you saw Venus. Jupiter would have been low in the east at any reasonable hour. (I assume you were probably not up and about at 3AM)

Ok, I'm doing being a space geek - for now.

Back to being a space geek for a minute...

Jupiter rose at about 10, here is the sky in Galapagos at that time:

Fish eye projection, flat horizon.

And now I'm kind of jealous - you could see stars I will never see from my location.

As the stereotypical broke student, I defiantly can't afford it. (I do well enough to afford food).

I'm just lucky there is a nearby observatory with quality instruments that I can access or I'd be to broke to do astronomy too. ;)

Space geeks rule!

I'm in Minnesota - same old Big Dip, same old Cassiop, same old Cepheus. Yeah, it was great to see different constellations than usual. (Did you read my "Star-gazing and Stumbling" link?)

It was at 6 p.m., coming back from James (Santiago) Island. I think it may have been in the west but I didn't write down where on the island we landed and its not on our itinerary. It was high in the sky (45 degrees?) and bright, bluish - dang I think you and the good Professor are right. It was Penis.

I mean Venus! Venus! :D

ooh movin piktures!

I'm there.

"Delusion" en espanole?

neat, and VERY needed.

but you lied.  that isn't video of your trip.

*sniff*

paraphrasing:

"I think the only good criticism of God Delusion, would be if someone could provide some evidence for the existence of supernatural beings.

None of the criticisms of God Delusion, or Harris' books, or Hitchen's ever raised a criticism that included any evidence for any supernatural beings."

basically, he's essentially correct that every criticism of his book revolved around ad-hominems and "intellectual laziness".

Yes, it is! That's Richard on our ship, talking the talk on the trip (the first of three, hee-hee) that he talked so well.

Are you kidding, man? Richard was the trip. ;)

but richard in equador is the same as richard in the UK.

in this case, far be it from me to shrug off the import of richard, but I was actually more interested in video of the galapagos itself.

I didn't take any  :(  but Josh did - a lot of stuff (plus a lot of Richard, sorry). I expect that he'll post that too, in which case I'll link to it here. I don't think he got any underwater shots, though, the naturalists did. And other people took photos and videos - we're supposed to share them. I'll put them up here.

And as a pal said chez moi, how lucky to see Richard wearing shorts. ;)

Ah but Kristine, that film deals with bitter, twisted people. My wife and I are lovely and inclusive healthy people. I am sure we would include you in any washing or chopping activities.

Your film was only about sexual imbroglios and the resulting fall out. That would never happen and irrelevant to the Homer Simpson-esque washing and chopping fantasy.

Anyway, we both love a good threesome! ;-)

Okay doke, more pics. The island of Fernandina, which is like landing on the moon. (Except it has lizards and bird-lizards.) :)

Note in the comments that AAI is planning a trip there with Richard Dawkins this December.
