My daughter has qualified for a Study Abroad program for next year, and narrowed down her choices to Swansea, Wales, or Edinburgh Scotland.

She is a Chemical Engineering Major

She Plays Rugby

Where do you think she should go and why?

edited for extremely bad spelling.

I've never heard of Edinbourough.  There is a town called Edinburgh, which, despite not being in Yorkshire, is a nice place*.  Interesting old buildings (World Heritage Site), lots of history, good pubs, and art and culture out the wazoo.  The main downside is it's going to be quite expensive to live there.

Swansea, unfortunately, is in Wales.

* My brother's girlfriend is from Glasgow.  If she asks, I never said that.

Yeah... I hear it's a city in some place called Scotland.

Sorry about that - I googled too, and thought I had the right spelling. Fortunately, she's smarter than me.  Takes after her Mom.

She'll find the Welsh easier to understand, I think.

Edinburgh isn't proper Scotland, IMHO.

I would go with Edinburgh if I was in this situation. It's spectacularly beautiful and pretty cosmopolitan and it's very easy to get to Glasgow, Newcastle and London. But then I don't know much about Swansea - much more industrial I imagine, but south Wales has been experiencing something of a renaissance recently.

Which university is she going to? That makes a difference too - there are more than one in each city I think.

Edinburgh is a lovely place, although it is rather expensive and has lots of tourists. Edinburgh Uni. has an very good reputation as well. I stayed in one of the halls of residence last year when I went there for a wedding and they were fairly good (better than I got as a student, anyway...)

I dont know much about Swansea. Most of South Wales is old ex-coal and industry country, maybe not as nice as Edinburgh. Although the Uni isnt one of the top ones I think its OK. On the plus side Wales is really the place to go for the rugby.

Whatever she chooses, Britain is a cool place (although as a Brit Im biased) and Im sure she will enjoy it.

I feel I have to defend South Wales. It's a beautiful place, with friendly people, and would be cheaper to live in than Edinburgh  (although practically everywhere is).

That said, despite the love of rugby being more likely to be satiated in Swansea, Edinburgh Uni will probably be a better choice, because I KNOW that place is a fantastic University, whereas I don't know much about Swansea as a university.

I'm part Scots-Irish. So I suggest Edinburgh. But not for that reason - because I'm also part Welsh. ;)

Congratulations to your daughter, J-Dog!

1) I am not Welsh. Erasmus is deluding himself because he likes to dress up as a sheep and hopes I'm a Welshman for the obvious sordid reason. Sorry Erasmus, but as I told you last time: "No. Not with those hips, sweetheart."

2) If it's rugby she wants to experience then Wales is currently the place to be. (Aside: Well done Wales! A very well deserved Grand Slam. I am genuinely pleased for you)

3) If it's education she wants then Edinburgh is the place, a very decent uni. Swansea's not bad, it's just not as good as Edinburgh. I don't know much about Chem Eng, but the Chem dept at Edinburgh is well regarded. Swansea has been sadly going a little downhill, more due to national politics than the fault of the academics who work there sadly.

Thats because all these foreigners come to live here.

Just before you all let loose with the jokes, I was born and brought up in Edinburgh, went to school in the city centre, etc.  Unfortunately the city ahs changed somewhat over the years, only marginally for the better.

As for J-Dogs daughter, Edinburgh is a medium sized town, there is definitely rugby due to the penchant for yahs to come to Edinburgh university.  I would reccomend it over Swansea unless you like to live in Wales.  Of course it will be a bit colder and windier in Edinburgh.  It depends on what sort of amenities your daughter likes, eg bookshops, Edinburgh has lots.  Nightclubs, ditto.

Guthrie - thanks for the post - but,  me just being a dumb Yank, I have to ask what is a "yahs"?

"Yah" is an insult hurled by inadequate members of the lower social orders and clean limbed, wonderful individuals who have been properly educated.

Or something like that ;-)

Louis

P.S. Derives from the fact that chinless wonders are often found to say "okay, yah?" to every sodding comment. It does not in any way make me want to kill them. Oh no. That judge acquitted me.

P.P.S. Basically Guthrie is pointing out that Edinburgh Uni is one of the many havens (St Andrews, Durham etc) for those members of the monied/upper middle classes who had a private school education. Typically "Yahs" were not smart enough to make the cut for entry to Cambridge or the other place, but were smart enough to be able to string a sentence together sufficiently well to blag their way through Clearing onto some humanities or social science course at a Red Brick (perhaps even Russell Group) university. See Wikipedia entry for "Future Foxton's Estate Agents in London and People Most Likely To Bankrupt Their Investment Bank/Hedge Fund". ;-)

So, when your daughter is far from home and being hit on in a bar by drunken morons, at least she will be being hit on by comparatively well bred drunken morons from a good home who have a decent chance of living in or near Clapham.

Sorry, far too many Brit in-jokes there for me to unravel.

I guess it would really suck to get buggered in the locker room before the game and then sill have to sit the bench on one of those teams Louis so we understand that you still have some resentment left over.  You seem to be handling it well.  Score one for maturity!

Louis got it about right.

J-dog- surely you can find out in advance if there is a womans rugby team at Swansea or Edinburgh.  I'm sure there will be one at Edinburgh, we had a womans rugby team in St Andrews, and I'm sure they played Edinburgh.

As for yahs, they say "yah" instead of "yes".  Just to give you an idea, I was back up at St Andrews last year, and thougth I'd drop by one of the university halls I had stayed at when I was there.  Since I was there they've actually knocked it down and rebuilt it (Nothing to do with me).  So I drive into the car park and realise there are lots of cars that are only 1 or 2 years old.  Or in other words, in the world of yahs, your parents will give you a new car when you go away to uni.  (Or your summer job at uncle johns merchant bank will pay enough to buy you a new car)

Guthrie - yes, thanks, through a "personal communication", I found out that Edinburgh does indeed have a women's rugby ream, and a couple of the players will even be on my daughter's team when they play in Germany over spring break this year.

Since the German's are expecting them to go cross-channel at Pas De Calais, I recommended they go in at Normandy.  Their driver, Geogeanne Patton, wants them to agressively push through France, breakthrough the defenses at the Siegfried line, and thinks they'll be in Berlin very quickly.

added in edit:  And don't call me Shirley...

Speaking of jokes, how's that {ahem} "little problem" of yours Arden?

Should I put your wife on the phone so she can tell you herself?

Dude, whoever, or rather whatever, you have there is not my wife. Erasmus has conned you again hasn't he. Did he convince you that dead wombat was a human again?

I don't think that surgery will help Arden's problem.*

* Just when you need a very specific video** on youtube, it isn't there.

** I refer, of course, to the Chinese restaurant scene in "Waiting for Guffman", which I quote:

Dr. Allan Pearl: Penis *reduction*?
Sheila: I said to him, "Ron, you've gotta do something!" And he says to me, "Well, why don't you get one of those vagina enlargements

*Carlson, you have no life, perhaps you can help me. When was the first known use of "HA HA THIS IS YOU" at ATBC, and who invented it?

**I know it wasn't Louis, his rumor runs more towards pitifully transparent attempts to compensate for his small genitals.

*Don't get me wrong, that can still be funny. But you know. ***Not the way Louis intended.

Pitifully transparent attempts to do what now?

Don't think you can disguise your own flaws by some utilisation of an obscure playground tactic, young man.

I'll have you know that sort of populist psychobabble won't wash with me.* Speaking of washing, you really should.

Anyway, enough talk about your rampantly diminutive genetalia, or even your diminutively rampant genetalia, or even your genitally rampant diminutives. They've received far more attention that they are worth in all cases. On to important and RELEVANT topics:

Is Lou FCD an HOMO and in love with Dembski?

I say, maybe!*

Louis

*Actually I say yes, but I'm not telling him that, he'll ban me faster than DaveTard. He's been a mod for ages now and has hardly banned more than 20 or 30 thousand people. He's itching for a bannination.

Bolding mine.

For shame, Tarden. For shame. And you a linguist. Son of a linguist. Grandson of a linguist. A linguist unto the 18th generation.

Next it will be missed zeugmas, split infinitives, badly used gerunds, possibly even an irrational loathing of the Oxford comma and a palpable hatred of the locative.

We're worried about you. Have you taken your special linguist medications?

An hour? Are you going to cuddle for 59 minutes and 45 seconds?

I'm not saying your sexual partners complain Arden, but I did meet one who said she'd been vaccinated for longer. And with bigger.

Louis

P.S. My wife's here at the moment, like I said, I don't know *what* you've got on your hands. My advice is to wash thoroughly. And I don't mean yourself.

The exact appearance of "HA HA THIS IS YOU" in the record is  difficult to determine.  However, it seems to be found in the same strata with Richard Hughes and his favored creation, the tardologue.  Given the first appearance of Richard in the fossil record during the January 2006 epoch, it is reasonable to infer that "HA HA THIS IS YOU" made it's appearance in the awkwardly (and some would say, misleadingly) named Cambrian Ass-plosion.  Which would date it to somewhere between August 2006 and March 2007, give or take a few hundred million years.

Now, I noticed Arden Chowderhead that you have also updated your profile.  If I can make an inference from this:

...you are either a sockpuppet or into fisting. Which is it?

Yeah... I think it was back in the Halcyon Days of the Summer of '05.  It was the summer of The Praying Marines, and DaveScot falling in love with Lou (well, Lou's Jannie Bell anyway) .  I was naught but a lurker then....

We had Dembski and Dave's Doomed Dover Predictions still to come and a lot of bannations yet to occur.

Then suddenly, HA HA THIS IS YOU appeared fully formed, and funnily functional - almost as if it were designed...

Added in edit:  BUT WHAT THE HELL DOES THIS ALL HAVE TO DO WITH SWANSEA OR EDINBURGH?

**Added in edit 2 - This reminds me of the Great Morningside Circle Game of THIS past summer - but at least I think it's the right thread for that!

Well just to throw a spanner in the works:

Swansea is not too far from the Gower, one of the most beautiful (and surfable) coastlines in the UK. Well worth a visit.

Edinburgh is relatively "close" (by comparison to say, London!) to Fort William and the mountain of Ben Nevis. Stunningly beautiful mountain and highland countryside, and great walks. Granted, Swansea is "close" to Snowdon, but IMO Snowdon is not a patch on Ben Nevis.

In all seriousness, both have great potential, but I'd edge in favour of Edinburgh simply because of the Uni.

Remind me to make sure you never get a job with the tourist board.   ;)

There is much more to the Highlands than just Ben Nevis.  A long coastline, Skye, and on the other side of the country you have the Cairngorms, probably the largest lump of mountains in the country.  Then there is the rolling borders, the views from everywhere in the entire country, etc etc.

LOL

Yeah I did undersell it just a tad!

How can my mere words do justice to one of the most beautiful landscapes on the planet?

I remember driving from Ediburgh to Fort William a few years ago, I nearly cried it was that beautiful, and I am not exaggerating. The Cairngorms are similarly magnificent, and you can occasionally ski on them! Let it go on record that I am a fan of the Scottish countryside, and leave it at that.

Also, Edinburgh is not so far from Glasgow, where you can get a stonner.

Better?

Coincidentally, I will be visiting Scotland this summer for a couple of weeks. Besides the fact that it was the homeland for my great-grandfather, and that we will be visiting his home village, my spouse has been invited to be a plenary speaker at a small conference in Aberdeen. We have plans to spend a few days on the Outer Hebrides (looking at birds and standing stone circles, barrows etc.) and a couple of days in the Cairngorms (looking at birds and tramping in the mountains), as well as the more civilized sections like Edinburgh and Aberdeen (not looking at birds and drinking pints).

So I will report back later on the accuracy of guthrie's and Louis's acclamations. I suspect that they are right. It will, of course take another trip before I can report back about Swansea, but that sounds lovely too! That will be too late to help out J-Dog in this particular search for information, sadly.

Incidentally, we plan to take Professor Steve Steve to visit Hutton's Uncomformity, where Hutton first came to realize the tremendous age of the earth.

It's Stonner.

Stoners are something else and, coincidentally, an integral part of the college experience. You have had this particular talk with your daughter I hope! ;-)

Incidentally a "stonner" is also a slang term for an erect membrum viralis. Just FYI of course.

Remember, he is located out in California.  It is still early there. If I had to guess, the ward orderlies don't start handing out the day passes until after morning meds have been consumed.  Give him another hour.

But, really, Louis, you shouldn't be so hard on poor Arden.  I think it is admirable that he is working so hard at his mainstreaming program.  I think we should encourage him in his goal of moving to a group home.

True, true.

I'm not hard on Chatfield, I look on him as the virtual American linguist brother I never had. I confess, his progress has been astonishing, why 'twas only mere months ago that all he could do was sit on the floor and dribble. He's been a very special little soldier.

When he makes it to that group house I think we should all chip in and buy him an ice cream.

Thanks to all for the comments - my daughter decided to go to Edinburgh, not Swansea, and she leaves in early September.

So, NOW, I got MORE questions! -

During part of her time in Scotland, she will be placed with a Scottish family, and will be expected to give the family a "small gift", usually representing something form her university or city.

WTF?

So, what would a Family of Scots want from an American student from Chicago?  I mean, other than money?

It's got to be small, they recommend taking only 2 suitcases, and my first idea was a Chicago Cubs baseball cap or caps, BUT I don't even know if they wear baseball caps in Scotland!

What do you all think might be appropriate and appreciated, given the parameters I outlined?

Albatrossity - You were just there - what's the story with using an American Laptop battery charger in GB?  (Yes, she does have a circuit converter.)

lappys should be fine and the power jammy thing even does both voltages - you just need an adaptor plug. Watching DVDs on it will be different - see if you can get region free frimware.

Send the family some toothpaste and hair dye so they can have good teeth and 'not look like ginger twats'. This will go down amazingly well

They wear baseball caps in Scotland. Usually whilst committing some form of crime. But that's Scots for you!

I'm think University branded alcohol is the way to go. ;-)

Failing that, get her to pick up a few cans of Special Brew and write "Chicago" in place of "Carlsberg" with a magic marker. Again, I'm sure you already know this, but as the drinking age in Scotland is 18 (well, officially it is), alcohol is actually an appropriate gift.

What would you give another American family under similar circumstances? It's not a massively dissimilar cultural situation.

Of course hangovers and chlamydia are the gifts traditionally associated with Scotland....but I'd save those for a second date.

Well, now that you mention it, there is, in Reformed circles, a well-known photo of John Knox enjoying a brewski at Chicagoland Speedway. Get a nice frame, perhaps something made from the bones of an Englishman, and that'd make a snappy gift.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland do in fact wear baseball caps while on duty (it's part of their uniform belive it or not).

Bourbon sounds fine, so long as the family aren't religious (evangelical Protestant) in which case they might not appreciate it.

Other than baseball and 1930's gangsters J-dog, what else is Chicago famous for ?

Albatrossity - You were just there - what's the story with using an American Laptop battery charger in GB?  (Yes, she does have a circuit converter.)

Most AC adapters for most computers, phones, iPods and other electronic devices are dual-voltage (work with 110 or 220 V). Take a look at the adapters to verify this, but almost all of them will be fine without any need for a voltage step-down.

So all she needs are the plug adapters to enable her to plug her American-type plugs into those silly three-prong thingies in the UK. She should take at least two or three of these if she is the typical American teenager with many electronic devices that need recharging on a regular basis.

Cubs baseball hats should be fine.  Being Scottish they will understand that you, as an American, have no real culture to speak of anyway.  ;)

Congrats to your daughter on choosing Edinburgh by the way.  The university is excellent and the city has much to offer, I can recommend just about all of the pubs in the Grassmarkets!

I think a Cubs cap is a good idea. The Cubs are pretty famous due to flms and TV, but thats not the sort of thing that you can pick up easily in the UK. Baseball isnt really popular (soccer, rugby and cricket, mainly), but everyone wears caps :-)

J-Dog, I know you asked this of the natives, but I travelled to Britain in May, 2003, and got all over the place.  I stayed in Edinbourgh for two nights, and briefly visited Swansea (the train pulled into then out of the station twice).  My perspective is that of a life-long U.S. resident who went as a traveller, not as a tourist - a bit different than the ones you asked for.

Scotland and south Wales were both very scenic.  The trains are excellent in both countries.  The people were very nice in both countries.

Edinbourgh was the busiest city that I visited on the trip.  People everywhere (especially "downtown" or in the castle/train station areas) going about their business.  Lots of traffic.  Lots to do and see, also.

South Wales (I stayed in Cardiff for two nights) was much more "sleepy"/laid back.

Both places have a plethora of castles to visit, all within a short day-trip via any means of transportation (including walking/biking).  I had lots of fun!

A couple of things that I found the most different "over there":
1.  The traffic is funny because the roads are very narrow and they drive on the wron, er, left side of the road.  There are no parking signs so people park everywhere.  I was surprised.  :)
2.  The main currency (the pound) is a coin, not a note.  Your daughter shouldn't be surprised if she pays for something with a 5 pound note and gets all-coin change.  Sure threw me the first time, though.  In a pub, no less.   :)
3.  Cops are nice people over there.  I found that they're not only approachable, but that they make some of the best sources of local information.
4.  TV is awful, except for sports and movies.  I saw an uncut version of Outlaw Josie Wales on their BBC movie channel when I was in Cambridge.  I watched a lot of (and fell in love with) their football.

Anyways, to make a long post shorter, I had a great time.  She should too, whichever college she chooses.  If she likes rugby, I think she'd like Edinbourgh best.  I rode on a train from there to North Berwick seated near a group of beer-drinking rugby fans/players going to a game.  Nice!

Best of luck to her.

Anyway, J-Dog, my 14c.   :)

I wanted to go, Pete, but the passenger ferry to Dun Loigaire (sp.) was being redone.  I would have had to pay car ferry price for a passenger ride.  :(

Next time.  Maybe 4 nights in Dublin, 2 in Waterford, 2 in Limerick/Cork, and 3 in Belfast.  Definitely Antrim coast.

I do have to do some research on a good hangover medicine before I go.  :)    :)    :)    :)

Around here, baseball caps usually indicate a predeliction for baseball bats, which in these parts tend to be used for percussive wealth distribution and ethnic attitude adjustment. Not to be recommended.

The chocolates sound like a good idea, but you might ask Mrs J. to see how they survive deep-frying in batter.

Worth seeing Jeffox. If you don't want to hire a car Ulsterbus tours do a number of daytrips usually with a very informative guide on board. Some of them take in the Giant's Causeway as well:

http://www.translink.co.uk/daytours.asp

Like most major cities in the UK there are also a number of tour buses that operate from the city centre. Both Glasgow and Edinburgh do something similar.

The shortest routes between Scotland and NI by the way, are either Larne - Troon, Larne - Cairnryan, or Belfast - Stranraer.

Peter-

Thank you for the trip hints to Belfast*, but the instructions say to "pack light" and her bloody flack-jacket weighs 20 lbs ( I think that's 6 stone for you?)**

* But she might go back to Dublin

** I totally made this number up, cuz I is too lazy today to google " funny weight system in GB".

Just for you Jef:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cBXHZNSUtyg

14lbs=1 stone

I still can't get to grips with the metric system though (an import from the EU). Everything's metric in the UK nowadays, except for speed (mph) distance (miles still) and pubs (they still use pints) although the EU constantly have their eye on it (pubs that is).

It's weird travelling from Belfast to Dublin. The speed limits change from mph to kph and distances from miles to kilometres once you cross the border. Very confusing unless you're familiar with the conversion factors.

" here.  Oh well.

I am Welsh (the name's a bit of a giveaway) but even I would say Edinburgh would be a better choice.  Swansea is greatly improved as a Town in recent years but Edinburgh has things like the Festival and so on.  Both are surrounded by wonderful countryside.

As I live in London and Wales is MUCH closer,  I have spent many happy days biking along narrow roads up through the ancient Cambrian mountains to mid Wales.

There were many sheep but I didn't see Louis once.

The Cubs baseball caps sound just fine; it is a token after all.  To be honest, I'm not sure that Bourbon would necessarily be well received.

Quick update and comment -

Erin (my daughter) loves Edinburgh, is having fun, taking lots of great pictures, traveled to the Highlands already, going to classes - which she says are too easy -  playing rugby with the First XV, and the reason for the post is that she gets to go "Live With The Natives" this week.

BUT - For some unfathomable reason, the school is sending her to live with an English family, not a Scotish family, so instead of drinking a nice single-malt and eating hagis, or deep-fried candy bar, she has to "motor-coach" to Southport England, where the fun seems to be a Museum... and I kid you not...

Lawnmower World

WTF???

Southport is an unmitigated shitehouse in my not-so-humble opinion. Went there for a wedding once. Not going back. They're glad, I'm glad. Your daughter has my pity.

However, she is not too far from Liverpool and Manchester, so a night out at Liverpool's "Crazy House" or Manchester's "Canal Street" seem to be in order....

** No, it really hasn't rained every day - she has taken some amazing photos, and they show some actual sunlight.

About a dozen years ago I used to read and contribute to 'Stumpers', an electronic mailing list mainly used by librarians. I found out I was about the only person there who wore a caggie to keep relatively dry. For the others, a cagoule was a 'long night shirt with a slit at the front for purposes of procreation'. A quick search suggests that meaning has now died out.

My only memory of Southport is of going to the sand dunes there as part of my high school botany course.

Thats the west coast it rains every day.  East coast is dryer, but its been wetter than usual for the past couple of years.  Its been a bit frosty as well, some nice sunsets.

See, if she can talk about the weather for ages then she'll fit right in.

She took a train south from Southport did a little spelunking while visiting Southport...  and I'm glad she remembered her early lessons and her parent's love of classical music.

She sent back a picture of The Cavern, the closest I would every get to saying someplace is holy, along with some pictures of some of the local residents.
