Over in the Books thread, I had said at the beginning of the summer that I was reading three books with the intent to write reviews of them. The first was Evolution, a View from the 21st Century, by James Shapiro.

I did finish it, and outlined a review, and I'm inching towards finishing said opus. In the meantime, one of the things that Shapiro harps on in the book is that SNP - point mutations - are not the be all and end all of variation. He is at pains to denigrate their importance compared to HGT, jumping genes, and whole genome doubling.

So I'm collecting stories of SNP that do make a difference, and the above story is one such. A single base change enables some horse lineages to learn new gaits.

ANother story I saw recently is that FOXP2 in humans is different by two base changes from chimps...

Since God designed malaria, She must be cool with humans evolving to avoid it.

A new study of a genetic mutatioin that decreases P. vivax susceptibility. Similarly to sickle cell anemia, the mutation causes a disease, but maintains itself in the population via the advantage against the local malaria strain.

Nice article in New Scientist on genome evolution -
http://www.newscientist.com/article....me.html

I didn't notice any real howlers, as sometimes happens in NS, nor any overstatements that creationists will be all-to-happy to latch on to. Many of the points of James Shapiro on "natural genetic engineering" are included, such as whole genome duplication. However, while Shapiro's language is cringeworthily telic, this article is strong on the use of "mindless" in describing evolution. Why does our genome look the way it does? Thank some chance viral infections, acquisitions of transposons, WGD, etc. No plan necessary.

Epigenetics fun!

A side issue is remarks about Cytosine deaminating and becoming Thymine. Has Uptight Biped considered this process in his semiotic theories?

Hi all!

I just finished my review of James Shapiro's "Evolution: a View from the 21st Century". It is at

Please stop by and give it a read, I would appreciate your comments.

Thank you!

Good review. I read through the book back when Amazon offered it free for the Kindle. UD announced this, but I think I was the only UD poster to download and read it.

I made a few of the larger points at the time, that Shapiro seems to flirt with the language of intelligent design, but he is not technically incompetent. Perhaps he is a theistic evolutionist, or perhaps he just think he can sell more books if it is controversial. I do not understand his motives.

His current moment of infamy is saying nice things to Upright Biped on HuffPo.

Perhaps "evolvability" will be the 21st century buzzword, and Shapiro would like to be known as the creator of the phrase "natural genetic engineering."

On a completely speculative note, I think about this stuff when I hear the phrase "search for a search." It seems likely to me that four billion years of evolution have found more efficient and powerful methods of producing variations than the weasel algorithm.

Proteorhodopsin genes in giant viruses

This teh awesome! Rhodopsin is a key protein used in the eye, the first step in capturing light and turning it into sensory information. It can be found even in single celled creatures that swim towards or away from light as a feeding signal. Here, the virus is modifying the behavior of the infected cell with its own rhodopsin gene.

Science broken.

L'AQUILA, Italy  An Italian court has convicted seven scientists and experts of failing to adequately warn citizens before an earthquake struck central Italy in 2009, killing more than 300 people.

The court in L'Aquila Monday evening handed down six-year-prison sentences to the defendants, members of a national "Great Risks Commission."

So basically, they don't want anybody in the country to study the subject of earthquakes?

After all, if somebody studies the subject yet doesn't immediately acquire ability to accurately predict events, and gets put in jail for that, the result will be they won't have anybody studying the subject.

Um.
