Pfff these aren't proper riots. These are silly kids going out for a lovely bit of looting and McDonalds burning because they can. It's not (yet) like the 80s when people actually had something to riot about. There's no unifying cause or principle behind most of this rioting. It's pretty sickening and my thoughts are with the victims of the riots.

What worries me is what draconian toss the Old Etonians are going to introduce on the back of it.

What Louis said.
One of the dirty little secrets of the Blair and Brown years is that very little was done about the deprived areas of the UK.  At the same time, policing methods changed somewhat, and became more touchy feely.  They needed to, but not necessarily as much as they have done.
(Protestors don't count, being political targets they are fair game for violence)

Note that most of them are teenagers - we have extremely high youth unemployment in this country, and over the last 20 years the old ways of turning annoying teenagers into upright adults have been shut down or lost.  One such way is through getting a job and working with adults who then beat you into line, but if you don't have a job...

Thanks -  You both bring up good points.  I feel better slightly reassured.

Say "Hi" to the Queen Mum for me.

Rubbish, of course they have something proper to riot about. Many of these poor deprived middle class kids don't have the very latest mobile phone, or a bigger flat screen TV than they already have, or a second XBox, or more than two pairs of fashionable trainers.

Many more are deprived of their human right to make money selling stuff that they don't own on e-bay. They are rioting about how their undeniable human right to have lots of shiny fashionable things for nothing is being denied them by the evil authorities and adults, who so unreasonably demand that they must first work hard to earn the money with which they can then buy stuff.

ITS SOOOOO UNFAIR!!!111!!

I know. I am tempted to go out and loot myself because I haven't actually bought the new BMW yet. The financing is all wrong.

I saw an interesting piece in the news yesterday about the situation in Tottenham and other nearby boroughs. Something I found interesting is how much things had improved in the 25 years since the Broadwater riots. I'm trying to find the piece with the details in atm and confirm the claimed stats as far as possible.

However, whilst things are not perhaps as bad as 1986, they are very far from good. There is still a large amount of very disaffected and dispossessed people in the UK. Relegated to second class existences in unpleasant sink inner cities. We'd be bonkers to claim these guys are as hugely disadvantaged as their forebears, but equally bonkers to claim they're not disadvantaged compared to the median of society.

From experience in France (the 2005 riots, regular car burnings, attacks on cops and all), the youth taking part in these riots are not exactly part of the demographic you are talking about.

Undoubtedly you are in part correct, some are, some aren't. As with anything in life it's more complicated and confused than anyone can simply express.

Yep! Social dynamics are a fucking mess. It will take more than a few rotten politicians and a few million internet posts to sort it out.

What a fucking waste of potential for these youths, though.

Heh. And us polite, reasonable, logical Canadians wreck our city when when our team loses. WTF?

Of course, once their images and names were posted all over the social networks, the yobbos were all "I'm so sorry I was drunk I didn't know what I was doing o what a lapse in judgment please don't judge/punish/make me return stuff!"

If they hadn't been caught they'd still be snickering to their buddies about what they got away with, but thanks to FB it's all Remorse-a-palooza.

During the evacuation of New Orleans for hurricane katrina, the biggest looters (in terms of actual dollars) were the police.

Seems, every officer that stayed behind decided that he needed to patrol the town in a brand new Cadilac SUV (or similar).

Kinda 'cute' when a guy appear on tv bemoaning his habit of buying a new Porche every year instead of spending the dough on doing some good...

But seriously, what we see is just an aspect of human nature. We have the capability of doing the ultimate good(?), sacrificing our life for someone we love, or to kill indiscriminately. And anything in between. For whatever reason.

But what we see not only in the UK but all over the world is, I believe, simply what we get in return for the gross mismanagement of the world. Anyone know the amount spent on war machinery and warfare since 1945?

I have 'always' thought it would be a good idea if a weapons embargo was imposed on Africa. Seems to me kinda immoral to give kids firearms. Like Kurt Vonnegut wrote in a short story: A guy visiting a nuclear bomb scientist.  After he left, the scientist found his little son toying with a handgun. The scientist shaking his head: "how could he?."

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and not clothed. The world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children....This is not a way of life at all, in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from an iron cross."
