I see Dembski is running his class on UD principles:

Quote
(1)  Mid-term exam — 20 percent positive.
(2)  Final exam — 30 percent positive.
(3)  Exercises — 50 percent positive. Exercises appear at the end of each chapter in  NCM. Answers to all these exercises need to be written out and handed in each  week.
(4) Single-page executive summary of YOU (with clearly recognizable embedded  picture of yourself) — minus 5 percent if not handed in. Due beginning of second  week of class.
(5) Active class participation — up to 10 percent negative.

Or, in English, active participation can't possibly help your grade, but if you participate anyway and Dembski doesn't like what you say, it will cost you grade points!

To be fair, this could also be read this as 'if you do not participate actively in class discussions, you will lose marks', which is fair enough. The course outline PDF has this written as 'full class participation', next to 'punctual attendance' - surely people arent going to lose marks for being on time!

To be even fairer (and more realistic), using UD rules, any poor kid who commits science or any other intellectual activity will lose a grade point.  He'll probably have DaveScot proctor his lectures and personally escort any malefactor (at least any who are weak enough) to the door and toss him or her out (up to three feet if the perp is light enough).

You'll note that I'm assuming here that Dembski is, if not right, at least consistent.

Can you imagine one of his lectures.

El Dim-one: Now class open your New Testament on page xxx John 3:19.

Leroy: Uh Sur mah buybull dohn't he-av dat dar page.

El Dim-one: (Bugs eyes out in disbelief, snaps fingers and the 4 housemen of the apocalypse burst out from behind a red curtain and drag Leroy out)
Any more questions ?
(he asks while peering lecherously at the younger females)

I honestly feel sorry for any student that is willing to take a Dembski class, especially the "Studies in Apologetics: A Primer on Intelligent Design" course.  Any student taking that course is obviously too stupid to think about getting their tuition fees refunded.  For christ's sake, recommended reading includes a book by Dense O'Leary.  That alone is enough for me to pity the fools.  Does anyone know what kind of salary Dumbski draws for teaching at the Seminary?

His real windfall comes from the DI and book sales.

I bet the grades for Dr.Dr's class are A, B, C, D, F and H (for Homo).

Come to think of it, Davescot would finally gravitate to his proper place as a cranky old janitor.

Kristine - Since you are known and easily identifiable as a woman, please feel free to apply for any subservient positions at the Seminary.  Please keep in mind that God has clearly stated that women are NOT allowed on top at seminaries.  Or anyplace else.

As DaveScott and Dr. Bill and God On High will tell you - don't you have something to do in the kitchen?

Wasn't there a movie about an Afghan girl who dressed up as a boy so that she could freely move around in a man's world?

Wouldn't that be funny if someone did that at SBTS?  :) (Thank you, I have a job already. Maybe this is a job for a man dressing as a woman dressing as a man...)  :D

Due to the ever-increasing number of trolls we've implemented major changes to the OE user system. When a person first registers, they have very few privileges, and their comments must be approved by a moderator. When we think that a user is a positive contributor to the site, we can "promote" them to the next user level that removes many of the restrictions. This will prevent trolls from being able to sign up easily and run amuck before a moderator can spot them.

Right now very few user profiles have been "promoted".

Have we discovered a new rule of thumb here? If the number of legitimate users was rising at the same rate as the number of trolls, you'd likely only notice the same proportion of trolling overall. However, if the fastest growing  (only growing) demographic of your website (movement) is largely troglodyte in nature does that indicate a movement that's caught the popular imagination?
It's all so naive, it's like somebody told Dembski about viral marketing and that's what they hoped the J Jones Fartimation would turn into, a worldwide underground success.

I have seen it before, unfortunately.  It's one of the several variants of "Christian Identity", the leading theology among the neo-Nazi/Klan types.  It says that the "pre-Adamites" were the non-white races and the Jews (who are all, literally, the children of the Devil).  Adam and Eve were, therefore, the first white people, who deposed Satan's rule and began the era of God's rule (and therefore white rule over the Satanic "mud people").

Interesting to see it showing up at UD (interesting also to compare it with Paley's blithering on another thread about the tired old "Darwinism led to Hitler" routine).

The anti-evolutioners have, of course, long had ties to various lunatic-right John-Birch-Society-type groups ("Dr" Hovind has lots of ties to the kooky "Christian Patriot Militia" movement, as have Pat Robertson, Chuck Missler, and a few others).

:O You have got to be kidding me. That's about as creepy as it gets. I do not grock anti-Semitism. It's so irrational and I don't get how anybody, but particularly a self-professed Christian, can be anti-Semitic. It just blows my mind. I thought I'd heard everything - I have never heard of this "pre-Adamic" stuff. How sick is that?

And yet you have the Rapture loonies who believe that before a well and truly certified dead  Mr. J. Christ can return to his old address (which by now must be inundated with junk mail) they must return all the Jews to Judea and then do some more loony things and then all go up to the sky.

Western civilization and presumably democracy, capitalism and modern education........would be a wonderful idea as Mahatma Gandhi once pointed out.

The mods - Bill, O'Leary - we know who they are. Just.
Samuel - could be anybody
Micah - Hum, unusual name

I thought it was probably Micah Sparacio, Managing Director of the Highly Important (and Highly Moribund) ID website, www.iscid.org.

Which reminds me, I was going to write Micah on the anniversary of his kicking me off the site for insisting on labeling Johnathan Well's web site as "CRANK".  Now that ISCID is essentially dead in the water, taken over by JAD and company, and with Chris Langan still a Fellow, I was wondering if he wanted to reconsider.

But then I asked myself if I wanted to post to a site dominated by JAD and Company that still had Chris Langan as a member and decided, "Ick!".  Sorry Micah.

There’s something that Dembski said in an online sermon that caught my attention, because I’m beginning to understand what makes him (and his Paley watch) tick:
Quote
You’re at a football stadium and there’s a 100,000 people there, and everyone gets a coin, a penny, to flip. And you flip. And you say, “Okay, everyone who has heads, stay standing, and everyone who has tails, sit down. Now those who are still standing, you flip your coin again…” And the laws of probability are such that you can get 17 heads in a row, wherein somebody is still going to be standing. Okay, now: 17 heads in a row, one person is still standing in this football stadium of 100,000 people. And you say, “You are just a wonderful coin flipper! It’s just amazing what you’ve done!” [audience laughter]

Well, I laughed too, because this is such a mischaracterization of evolution once again! For one thing, it omits natural selection altogether (natural selection is not like coin flipping). But if Dembski is serious in viewing evolution in this manner, small wonder that he tries so hard to refute it. But after everything he’s written and said there’s just no excuse for him to be so uninformed.

Kristine,

It's even better than you think.  Dembski stole that coin-flipping example from Richard Dawkins, who used it in his 1991 Royal Institution Christmas Lectures to explain why coincidences are not evidence for the supernatural.  The demonstration begins at 3:30 into this video:

Well, there is also the current crop of fundies who are trying very very hard to end the world.  Literally.  That would be guys like John Hagee, and "God's News Behind the News".  These fundies are raising money to help all the Jews emigrate to Israel.  Once the Jews are gathered together, they want nuclear war in the Middle East, so Armageddon will begin, some of the Jews will be converted to Christianity, and the rest of the Jews will die in the war.  Then Jesus will come back and the world will end.

They are nutty.  All of them.

Standard creationism, cherry-picking and twisting.
