Obviously you need someone to hold your hand and tell you what the data says and only if it agrees with what you already think will you accept it."

Dr. Batiza would disagree. I looked up her work after you posted text from her work ...

Here's Joe speaking to idcurious:

"Strange how none have left ID to become blind watchmaker proponents."

...Because many "ID supporters" weren't ID supporters to begin with...

And of course Joe doesn't like to mention Templeton Foundation. Weren't there also various other people who formerly said they supported ID but recanted?

OK Joe,

I'm calling you out.  Formal debate.

We each get an opening post (say 2500 words), a rebuttal post (max 1200 words), and a closing post (max 400 words) on a mutally decided topic related to Intelligent Design (since ID is not anti-evolution, then there's no point in even bringing that into it).

We'll co-locate each post at our respective blogs.  IOW, we both post both of our openings, rebuttals, and closings.  That's about as close to an actual 'neutral' site as either of us will be willing to go to.

I'm not interested in declaring a winner or loser.  We both know you won't accept anything I (or anyone else who isn't JoeG (or a sock thereof) says.  We both know no amount of evidence will sway you one way or the other.

I, for one, will allow all comments, from any interested parties regarding the debate on my blog.

I would suggest the following topics of discussion:

Intelligent Design cannot distinguish between an Intelligent Designer and a non-intelligent source of complexity.  (I'm for, you would be against)

Intelligent Design's predictions have been accurate with regards to scientific discoveries.  (You are for this, I would be against.)

How's that sound Joe?  It's as fair as I can make it.

What is it with Joe and the "blind watchmaker"? It seems every time I turn around, Joe has changed a subject or discussion somewhere to focus on some "blind watchmaker theory". He did it the other day on UD and went on a ramble about it:

It's his totem or something.  He can't argue against actual evolutionary theory so he's made one up based on the blind watchmaker and that everything dealing with evolution is chance.

But...but...but...he insists that ID ISN'T ANTI-EVOLUTION! What then is the point of creating a evolutionary strawman to beat on?

But wait...in that UD thread, he indicates to Heinrich that evolutionary predictions aren't blind watchman predictions. Then later on they are. Then later on...it changes again...and again...and again...

Joe is so inconsistent, he has to zip up his pants and wash his hands before he goes the bathroom.

Joe is nothing but totem phrases.  There's little evidence of consciousness at all: just bluster and burb, IOWs and Ya Sees, "blind watchmaker theory" and "culled genetic accidents."

It's not just that he's a bad -- nay, a terrible -- writer.  It's that his entire oeuvre is defined by Pavlovian response to stimuli.  It's not clear that he could even pass a Turing test, though the rage may be too much for a computer to simulate.

Talk about your blind undirected processes!

No, I hadn't seen this. †Is the implication that Joe can read books?

I'm not sure how that's possible since its proven that he cannot retain more than two sentences in memory at one time.

Hmmm... After my key review here, I think I'll page through this... it ought to be entertaining.

Is there a way to get it to show all of Joeys posts?  Having to click each one seems to be a hassle.  Of course, there is the element of opening presents - you never know what fetid pile of dung you'll be getting.

Should we post a link to Joe's thread here for the elucidation of onlookers?

Dr. Batiza would disagree. I looked up her work after you posted text from her work and discovered her email address, batiza@msoe.edu. I wrote her the following email:

Hello Dr. Batiza,

A Mr. Joseph Gallien is promoting your work as supportive of so-called 'design inference'. He is an advocate of 'intelligent design' and in fact promotes that movement's notions as a superior scientific theory in the school his daughter attends where he also claims there is no evidence that populations evolve by way of natural selection sufficiently acting on random mutations. Here he is citing your work: http://www.amazon.com/review....5XFGLHW

I would be most appreciative understanding your perspective. Especially by way of publishing a comment post in the thread linked to above. I also thought you'd appreciate knowing your work was being leveraged in this manner.

Sincerely,

Michael E. Heath

Dr. Batiza responded this afternoon:

Hello Mr. Heath,

I appreciate your bringing this to my attention. Mr. Gallien's making that inference is completely unwarranted and his using my name to do so is without permission. Intelligent design is in no way supported by my writing. The assault on science by such individuals displays their lack of understanding the internal consistency of the thousands of genomes now sequenced, the even greater number of protein sequences now stored at the National Center for Biotechnology Information, and the way in which theses enormous data sets support the fossil record of evolution. Please update me if this person continues to misconstrue my writing.

Hi Kevin,

I am calling you out.

I will debate you- I take the side ID is not anti-evolution and you take the position you spew that ID is anti-evolution

I take the side that the theory of evolution posits the processes are blind, mindless and undirected, ie accumulating genetic accidents. You support whatever it is you think the theory posits.

And finally I will take the position that ID is the best explanation for what we observe and you take whatever position you think best explains the evidence.

My prediction is you will not accept. But if you do then we start with the first, hash that out and move on to the next.

Joe, OK.  Fine.

The topic is "Intelligent Design is Anti-evolution".

Joe is Against this proposition.
Ogre is For this proposition.

Do you agree with a 4500 word limit for the first post?
Do you agree with one round of rebutal of 2000 words?
Do you agree with one closing statement of 500 words?
Do you agree that we will both post all six statements, word for word on each of our respective blogs?

How about 1 week per post?  It's currently Friday the 22nd.  Opening statements of 4500 words due by Friday April 29th to be posted to the blogs no later that Sunday May 1st.

The Rebuttal will be due by Friday May 5th to be posted no later than Sunday May 7th.

Closing statements will be due Friday May 12th to be posted no later than Sunday May 9th.

Agreed?

If so, then I will create a 'debate' e-mail account for you to post your material to.  I'll create that later this morning.
I'll need a way to get my posts to you.

Good Joe, now that you're here...

1) Remove that copyrighted picture that you do not have permission to use.

2) You might want to look back at what we agreed to.  The topic is "ID is not anti-evolution"... why does any definition of evolution even come into this?

I think the title of my post will be "ID evolution: Oxymoron or just moron?"  nah... I'll be nice.

BTW: On the technical side, the copying from one blog to another blog will be fraught with peril, but I can live with it.  I'd prefer to send you raw HTML that way there's no formatting concerns to deal with, but whatever.

Since there won't be an exchange of posts, I submit that Fridays are good enough time limits.

What you said, Louis.

Obviously, as a debate, this is over before it starts.  A debate with the loony on the bus regarding whether the Freemasons are coming for our string would go the same way, and for the same reasons.  The only real source of tension is the nature and scale of Joetard's tantrum.

I think the possible outcomes are;
1.  Running away.
2.  Non-sequiturs.
3.  Internet tough-guy threats.
4.  Bottom!

I predict an early onset of 2, rapidly followed by a 3/4 combination, then a declaration of victory and 1.  Just like all his other "discussions".

Alas, as much as this sounds like a grand battle of wit and skill - of which Ogre is without question significantly more endowed - we all know how this will actually go. There is no way to score points with someone who won't stay on topic - see Gish, Morris, Bahnsen, Craig, etc...But far worse is the impossibility that is a debate with someone incapable of even pretending, nevermind actually recognizing, there is a topic - see Joe. †Joe has no concept of what the statements he posts actually mean, nevermind what anyone else posts.

It's funny to recognize when someone is just plain inanely wrong, but Joe - Joe's comments attain the level of so-far-out-in-left-field-they're-not-even-wrong. And THAT'S when he isn't cursing or tossing out kindergarten insults. †

My wife says it so well: "it is impossible to make a rational point to someone who isn't arguing from a rational position.

I wish you the best of fun, Ogre, but there's no point in wishing you good luck given the set outcome of this event.

That's not my purpose.  My purpose is to do some research, write a little, and have some fun.  When I'm done, this could be publish worthy.

I'm up to 2700 words and haven't gotten past... well the part I'm working on.  I don't want to spoil the fun Joe will have in his rebutal.  And that BTW: Is what I'm really looking forward to seeing.  Talk about comedy gold.  It has the tardential of being better than the Behe cross-examination at Dover.
