Just came across this article on CNN.com

So is the ID an Idiot or just an AHole? Really. What kind of being would supposedly do something like this to a child?

I'm finding a lot of sites that discuss what the genetic defect is, but not much dealing with research in fixing it. Honestly, most of the technical stuff is over my head (I'm a carpenter, not a doctor, Jim! ) but the short version seems to be "he has a messed up gene". I sort of get that this is an example of genetic mutation, right?

Anyone want to dumb the science down for me? What sort of research is going on that might hold hope for correcting such a problem? Perhaps an explanation in English for this page- Oxford Journals ?

At the end of the Oxford Journal page, the author comments about developing a drug, but how would the drug work? Is it a matter of somehow swapping out the defective gene, or getting some gene that's "off" to turn "on" or something?

Oh, and if it's ok, could we keep the "if you eat steak, you get cow DNA" type of nonsense to a minimum?

And IDer would tell you "intelligent design" does not mean "optimum design" which is their way of saying "God moves in mysterious ways" which is another way of denying the inherent immorality of their religious mythology.

Or to add insult to injury, they'd suggest "God has a special plan for this child"

I think it was Camus who wrote something to the effect of "when a Christian sees a child whose eyes have been burned out, they must either burn their own eyes out or abandon their faith"

The usual reaction of an IDC advocate when presented with an example of suboptimal design is to say that such arguments are simply irrelevant to the discussion. When you press them as to WHY this is irrelevant, they can't say 'God works in mysterious ways', so they say something about how ridiculous such arguments are. When pressed further about why it's ridiculous, they change the subject or disappear. I think 'Donald' at PT pulled that little rhetorical maneuver earlier this month.
