When the PI in whose lab I worked 10 yrs ago found out I was cleaning SiOx chips with Hot Piranha Solution, in other words this on a hot plate, he was, let's say, less than relaxed and soft-spoken. Â :p |
The school I taught at had a number of students who... shall we say... were a few fries short of a Happy Meal.
One of our chemistry teachers (an amazing optimist) was doing an experiment with sodium hydroxide. One of his students boiled the stuff, then GRABBED IT WITH HIS HAND to take it off the bunsen burner.
Needless to say, the boy dropped the beaker, which shattered and splashed him with boiling sodium hydroxide. The boy is African American. He now has some very white spots on his hands and lower face. |
My favorite cautionary tale involves a student I had while working as a TA in grad school. Â She was wearing her safety goggles on top of her head rather than over her eyes, so I pantomimed pulling them down to the proper position. Â She reached up with a beaker in her hand and poured the entire thing over her head. Â Luckily it was some dilute salt solution we were using for a lab on conductivity. Â Nearly two decades later, I still use that story in my safety lessons.
