I don't think it suggests not going to church. Rather it suggests not drawing attention to yourself for doing so or for doing any other righteous action.
If your going to give to others in the name of God, do so anonymously or at the very least, quietly.
When you pray, do so by yourself or at the very least, unobtrusively.
Put your love in things that exist in heaven so that the things you love will never wither, rot, or fade.
Etc...
In other words, do good things for God/yourself, not for other people's approval. |
Seems pretty clear to me:
Quote | 5 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. |
Emphasis mine. Of course you could go to church for, erm, not-praying.
