Driver, have you actually ever read any of Lewis' fiction?
Daughters # 1 and #2 thought the Narnia stories were boring. Of course they were reading The Enchanted Forest Chronicles in 4th grade.
"Out of the Silent Planet" wasn't too bad - no Stanley Weinbaum, but better than early John W. Campbell. "Perelandra" was incredibly preachy and not worth much.
"That Hideous Strength" is accurately titled: hideous. |
Loads. Loved the Narnia books as a kid, in fact I have read and enjoyed them as an adult. Paid no mind to the Christian parallels. I still pick up The Silver Chair now and again. It is only short but entertaining.
I read the Ransom books in my twenties and they were great fun. IIRC, ransom is a cross between a Jesus figure, Flash Gordon, and an oxbridge prof, which is hilariously vainglorious, and there is an exposition in there on heaven, BUT if you treat it as just as mythical as you can LOTR, then overall the books are refreshingly different, exciting, beautifully descriptive in parts, passionate, and contain some neat (intentional) humour that saves them from being too bombastic. This review is over fifteen years old, mind you, but that trilogy has stayed with me.
The Screwtape Letters, letters written by a charming and urbane Devil, are witty and lots of fun too. As far as I can remember, there is no attempt at a serious theological point.
