That's not just any old random spam. That's spam from David Markuse, aka David Mabus, aka any number of aliases that he uses because he regularly has to invent new nyms to replace the nyms that get burned when admins ban his spamming ass.
Markuse is not well. He's also under a court order to stay the fuck off the Internet. Given his behavior which resulted in said court order, it's no surprise that he's up to his old tricks again.

Ogre's week of epicness...

Last weekend, I sealed the grout on 2000 square feet of floor, plus 2 showers and 2 bathtub/showers.  Then I went to work for two days and rested.

Wednesday, we moved.  I still haven't found my deodorant, my Kindle, and my two cats.  Even in a violently clean house, 5 years of accumulated dust can cause some serious issues... which it did.  My sinus infection is now in it's third day.  Yay me.

Yesterday, we moved the storage buildings (yes, there were two) contents to the new house.  While not such an epic undertaking, the boxed stuff from the house (you know, the stuff we actually use) is now behind and underneath the boxes from storage.  Which, of course, where in storage for a reason.

As to where I've been for the last few days... in terms of on-line.  Well, that's a funny ('sigh', not 'haha') story.

So, the AT&T guys came out Wednesday to hook us up.  Unfortunately, while the house is wired to the gills, there are no wires or cables that actually go to the house.  So yesterday, the construction supervisor came out to figure out what was going on.  He piddled around for a few hours.

We live on a corner and, according to the AT&T site map, our house should be using the junction box that's across the street.  But there are no conduits that go from that box across the street.

Apparently, the install techs made a command decision to not run the conduit under the street, but along side the street to the North VSLAM instead of the central one.  It seems that they didn't finish because, there's still no connection from my house to any VSLAM in the area.

The construction super, supposedly, has a crew coming out to install the conduit (underneath the yard that I fucking sodded by myself) today.  Being AT&T, the 9-11 appointment time has come and gone.

The good news is I will have fiber optic line to the house... the bad news is that no one knows WHEN I will have fiber to the house.

sigh....

So, here I sit, in a French bakery (damn the luck) catching up on a week's worth of e-mail and other stuff.

For sheer cluelessness, nobody beat GTE phone techs back in the day.

I once had an order for a second phone line that went to four visits because the first two times the tech came out, saw I already had a line, and went on to his next appointment. The third visit the tech installed the second line. It just wasn't connected to the apartment I was in. The fourth time, I specifically took time from work to be there and didn't let the guy leave until I confirmed a dial tone on the second line.

But it does sound like a heck of a week you've had.

Circular structure at bottom of Sea of Galilee.

Questions for tardoholicsophiles:

1. Which biblical story will this irrefutably confirm? ("All of them" is not an acceptable answer.)
2. Who will have predicted it but not had an opportunity to say so until now? ("All of them" is not an acceptable answer.)
3. Which UD contributor will be the first to refer to its geometrical regularity within two sentences of the words 'intelligence' and 'design'? (See above)
[ETA]
4. Which flavour of CSI will be first to be used to disprove the possibility of the structure having evolved by random flagelation? ("Miami" is not etc etc)

I have Clearwire (wireless). Several years now.

I hope I never have to go back to wired.

I get good telephone service over IP, good video. few outages.

I can take the receiver with me.

Har har...

Here's how it's supposed to look

house--------------------------VSLAM

Here's how it looked before yesterday

house---------     -------------VSLAM

As far as wireless, I'm trying to get as much off of wireless as possible.

With fiber to the house, I should be getting 20-25 Mbit/sec down and 10 Mbit/sec up.  I bloody well better be getting that.  With basically two households in my house right now, we have two TVs, 4 computers, 3 tablets, 2 smartphones, and a roku and X-box.  I suspect that the boy will be getting a computer sooner rather than later.

My mom HAD to have regular TV service.  We haven't had cable or satellite for almost 2 years before this.  Everything is either on Netflix or Amazon video on demand (Orphan Black is way cool!).  But we need high speed internet.

I work from home and the missus does a lot of art online.  Unfortunately, 24 MBit/sec is about the highest you can get in the US (yes, because we suck).

I'm currently looking for Augustine's work. I  haven't studied it in *a long time*.

Project Gutenberg has three books by St. Augustine, Bishop of Hippo:

The Confessions of St. Augustine

Confessiones (Latin) (presumably the same as above, but in Latin (which may be the original from which the English was translated, I dunno))

King Alfred's Old English Version of St. Augustine's Soliloquies

Google Books allows you to search for books by a particular author with this search term: inauthor:"Name of Author". Doing this with "Saint Augustine" in place of "Name of Author" yields… "about 21,200 results", of which list the very first item is The Works of Aurelius Augustine: A New Translation.

Hopefully the above information will be helpful to you.

If she were a man, would the photo have bothered you as much?

Speaking personally, no, it wouldn't.  That's because there is a huge assymmetry in the way society associates beauty with personal quality. Lack of youth or beauty, or can hamper a woman's career in a way that simply does not hamper a man's.  Look at any tv show.  How many elderly ugly men do you see?  How many elderly ugly women?  What do the scars of injury do to a man's charisma, as opposed to a woman's?

Scribbling on a photo seems a pretty shoot-yourself-in-the-foot tactic to me anyway, but yes, I do think it is more offensive to do it to a woman, especially a middle-aged woman, than to do it to a man.

Ah, so 'equality' for the sexes is a bad thing, even though women have loudly argued for it and bluntly demanded it for a long time. I guess I've been wrong for listening to women and for thinking and accepting that equality means equality.

Actually, lots of elderly women have done or are doing just fine in their TV or movie careers, and many other careers, whether they're considered "ugly" by anyone or not, e.g. Judi Dench, Queen Elizabeth, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Maggie Smith, and Betty White.

And when it comes to o'bleary's "career", I doubt that there's anything I could do to harm it more than she does.

By the way, I don't recall ever seeing or hearing anyone publicly denigrate Queen Elizabeth's looks but her son, Prince Charles, has been denigrated a LOT (in print and pictures) about his looks, especially his ears, and he's certainly not the only man who has been very publicly picked on about his looks, in print, altered photos, and exaggerated, deliberately insulting drawings.

"That's because there is a huge assymmetry in the way society associates beauty with personal quality. Lack of youth or beauty, or can hamper a woman's career in a way that simply does not hamper a man's."

Generally speaking, I strongly disagree that a lack of youth or beauty can (or does) hamper a woman's career in a way that simply does not hamper a man's, if the man or woman are in essentially the same position in the same field. Sure, there are instances where society or employers wrongly discriminate against women because of their lack of "beauty" but there are just as many instances where men are discriminated against for the same reason. Being a man isn't as discrimination free and cushy as you seem to think it is.

Case in point: Governor Chris Christie of New Jersey. He's a middle aged politician that some people think will run for president of the USA in 2014, but he is constantly picked on because of his excess weight ("lack of beauty") even though weight has absolutely nothing to do with being a good or bad governor or president. How fat he is is much more prominent in news stories about him than anything he does as a politician.
