Inference: International Review of Science – Publishing – Is looking for a full-time Mid-Senior level Editor (Writing/Editing)
1. Work Environment
Company Inference: International Review of Science
Company Description Inference: International Review of Science is a new quarterly online review dedicated to providing a critical appraisal of the sciences—from anthropology to zoology—in the form of critical reviews and essays. We are committed to the highest standards of criticism. While we are pleased when we can attract the general reader, nothing that we publish is written with the general reader in mind. When evaluating submissions for publication, space is not a consideration. The debut issue of Inference was published on October 15, 2014. http://inference-review.com/....iew....iew.com
2. Position
Job Description I. Summary We are seeking an editor to join the Inference editorial team in Paris. Working alongside a close-knit team of friendly, dedicated and hard-working editors, the successful applicant will be editing challenging and compelling manuscripts across a range of scientific topics. This is a demanding, but rewarding role, for which a highly skilled editor will be suitably remunerated. This position is now open with the possibility to begin work immediately.
II. Background Applicants must have a background in the hard sciences: Mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, statistics, or computer science. Applicants need not have a graduate degree, or even an undergraduate degree; but must nonetheless possess the requisite background, no matter how acquired. Native, or near native, level fluency in verbal and written English is absolutely essential. Fluency in additional languages, French in particular, is desirable, but not a pre-requisite. Prior editorial experience, whether for a scientific journal, or in the publishing industry at large, working directly with authors, is highly advantageous. Applicants with an unorthodox background, but possessing the requisite scientific knowledge and language skills, will be considered for this position.
III. Role Editors at Inference are assigned a manuscript upon its acceptance for publication and are responsible for the manuscript until it is ready to be passed into the hands of the journal’s copy-editor. An editor must be able to grasp the overall point of an essay, recognize its weaknesses in both argument and rhetoric, and then work with the author throughout the editing process. Revisions may be incremental, or fundamental. Editorial work is both self-effacing and self-promoting. A good editor must allow himself to be a writer's second self without quite allowing himself to be a writer's second voice. Inference has no ideological, political, or religions agendas whatsoever. Editors must be able to approach manuscripts free of preconceptions.
3. Location Applicants must be based in Paris, or its environs.

You may be surprised that peer review is not mentioned but Inference is quite open about this fact: Quote | Although the editors appeal to experts for advice, Inference is not peer-reviewed. Writers must please the editors. They need please no one else. |
I just wonder if articles written only for arrogant editors who don't care about their readers will help the journal to survive its first issue. OTOH, the emperor's new clothes worked for some time, though.
