Quote | The morality problem was one of the main reasons I decided to become a theist again. Of what value is being a “good” person, or even trying, if it is only in accordance to one’s own whims or the ebbs and flows of popular views?
I can’t imagine the depth of self-deceit necessary to feel comfortable, much less satisfied, with such a facile concept of “good”. That sort of good seems to me to be the sort of “good” only a sociopath or mindless drone could accept. |

Not that he even thinks his deistic god exists, just that he couldn't cope without one. |
He doesn't even need to be a theist - he's a 'natural law' moralist. Not sure why he adds God to the mix, since he thinks even capital-H He is bound by the Law.
Talk of self-deceit is rich. He believes in free will, except that in matters moral, you only have free will in a 'do ya feel lucky, punk?' kind of way. If it makes him happy and restrains his urges then fair play. Not everyone needs that - they recognise more immediate consequences, like feeling shit about doing 'wrong'. |
As you imply, his referring to sociopaths is also rich. Not that he certainly is one, but that he talks about morality as if he is. |
Yes - I often wonder, when people talk of personal restraints such as empathy, guilt, revulsion etc, whether he has any idea what they are talking about!
Perhaps he isn't being intentionally offensive when he refers to people of different opinion as 'mindless drones', 'automata' etc. This isn't an original observation, but a less funny Sheldon Cooper comes to mind.

BTW, when you make little jabs like “I thought basic logic was one thing UDers could handle,” you come off looking especially silly when you turn out to be wrong. - Barry Arrington
