Oh what a tangled web they weave when at first they practice to deceive!

(Hey, maybe with more practice, they might actually get the trick to work? :p )

This is an interesting bit of science history

Apparently, Einstein wasn't the only one working on the E=mc^2 thing...

25,000 generations of evolution used to explain the existence of modularity in the brain.

http://www.sciencedaily.com/release....300.htm

Hod Lipson is one of those authors I look for.

Basic finding is that including a 'wiring cost' induces the formation of modular networks.

The Santa Fe Institute is offering its first online course, Introduction to Complexity. It is free to enroll, and enrollment is not even necessary to access the course materials.

The instructor is Melanie Mitchell, who many will recognize as the author of "An Introduction to Genetic Algorithms".

Much of the coursework involves the NetLogo language.

I particularly am liking David Krakauer's guest spot in the first set of videos. (Especially the operational definition of complex systems given around 3:10...)

A pretty good article on the research and questions addressed that went into the predictive description of what the first ancestor of mammals likely looked like.

It's Four Times Friday for me. Here's a fourth article from Yahoo I'm passing on. New evidence supporting the hypothesis that the mass extinction at the end of the Cretaceous was do to a massive meteorite impact in Mexico.

It doesn't say anything about the meteorite travelling back in time after Adam ate the wrong kind of fruit.  Is that settled science now?

This doesn't really fit any other thread, so I'm putting it here because it is somewhat related to to the subject of science. Sense About Science has a number of interesting publications - mainly concerning skepticism. There are also some about how peer review works and such. The publications are directed towards educating the public rather than scientists.

One for Joe G Bigfoot genome published! And it's in a peer reviewed journal and everything!*

*The author of the paper bought a journal and renamed it, the paper in question is its inaugural... so we know the peer review was out of this world good

Looking across multiple genomes allows the reconstruction of ancestral protein-protein interaction networks. The simplest explanation of the resulting history is duplication and divergence.

But you knew that.
