You don't have any idea what definition they are using. "Encode" doesn't fit what is happening. There is this thing you will be taught some time in elementary school if you ever get there. It's called "word substitution". You substitute either different words or the different definitions of the word being used. Then you see what fits. There isn't anything being converted into a code. There isn't a definition of "encode" that fits what is happening. And that is why you won't find it in any of the labs- the people who do the actual work.
