Has anyone read this article?
North Carolina Algonquians, in the Smithsonian's "Handbook of Native Americans"
Real good read, not much is known about the Algonkians of North Carolina, given most of 'em were wiped out in the 17-18th centuries. Apparently small pox wiped out as much as 25% of villages in some areas, not just that, you have the devastating tribal wars, which were exacerbated by the want of European goods, so tribes would fight to the death for access to White trade goods, y'know, like alcohol, guns, and 'powder.
Then after a while the colonists just wiped out most of the survivors of the wars, selling most into slavery (as they did with the Wampanoag and Pequot, of Massachusetts and Rhode Island, respectively), the few that escaped the might of the colonists escaped to the Tuscarora, which were still a powerful nation at the time, before being utterly destroyed by a combination of Cherokee and Colonial soldiers.
The English left little as to the Algonkian's sustenance, but presumably, from comparison from Virginia Algonkians like the Powhatan, and the archaeological data, fishing was a heavy part of their diet, forming a majority of the food remains at some sites.
