Alleged sightings of Yetis in Kemerovo and the neighboring Altai region, about 1,988 miles (3,200 kilometers) east of Moscow, are up three times compared to 20 years ago, with scientists estimating that there is a current population of at least several dozen in the area.

Other evidence of the existence of the creatures -- such as basic twig huts, twisted branches and footprints of up to 35 centimeters (14 inches) -- also has been found in the area.

A group of scientists from the conference will be sent out to search the region's mountains to examine the evidence and try spot a Yeti.

It will be the first expedition of its kind since 1958, when scientists from the Soviet Academy of Sciences scoured Western Siberia trying to catch a Yeti.

Igor Burtsev, who heads the Moscow-based International Center of Hominology, said, "When Homo sapiens started populating the world, it viciously exterminated its closest relative in the hominid family, Homo neanderthalensis. Some of the Neanderthals, however, may have survived to this day in some mountainous wooded habitats that are more or less off limits to their arch foes."

Whoda thunk? ;)

I love how the American press describes Russian geography. Imagine someone mentioning Boise, Idaho, as a place 2 thousand miles west of Washington, DC.

Quick, send JoeG out there. He can argue that since the yeti population is rising, then temperatures are falling, hence global warming is falsified. Also, he can demonstrate hybridization, hence falsifying the kind of evolution he doesn't like. Two birds, one stone. How can he lose?

Stuff like this always reminds me of Murray's line from Ghostbusters, "You're right, no human being would stack books like this."

HAHAHAHA

The picture they show with the footprint is a CENTIMETER ruler.

Someone needs to tell FoxNews that the rest of the world uses this new system of measurement called the metric system.

Not exactly a smoking gun... or a dead body (which is about the ONLY evidence that will be acceptable, a live yeti would be the other form of acceptable evidence).

The only news better than this would be The Discovery Institutes usual Science By Press release wherin they announce an expected long and fruitful partnership of IDScience, BibleCode Science and Yeti Science!

If only they could get along with the UFOlogists.

In other boring news:

No scientists are listed in the article by name.  The only 'institute' mentioned was set up by two people (who, as far as I can tell, are also the only ones associated with it).

Igor Burtsev is a 'candidate in history' whatever that means.  It sounds like "all but dissertation' to me.  Anyway, that's history, not science.

The other one, Dmitri Bayanov, is walking on 80 years old and, similarly, has no listed degrees or credentials.

Finally, I can find no reference for either of them on the web that's not bigfoot related, with one exception.  Burtsev has a note in wikipedia about some gifts of slaves that may have been made to Peter the Great.  Woopty Doo.

If this is what FauxNews thinks scientists are, then we have a major public relations issue.

Ha ha...this brand of SETI/Yeti crypto is an obvious fiscal agenda meant to spark more faith in alien ID than Spirit ID and more faith in a bipedal Bigfoot than non-opposable Bigfoot toes.

I figure it is just a scam for some out of work dungmisters. They get some "Yeti" fans to send them money, they get drunk, and they publish photos of their hairy assholes.

They should have gone for the big cash, and "discovered" Noah's Ark. Fragments of the "true cross" are still selling well after 1980 years. They could collect those and build an Ark. It would be better than Ken Ham's Ark because it was the real True™Cross© Ark.

So Bigfoot is a Neanderthal, now? Interesting. Check this out: Entering Dubious Realms: Grover Kranz, Science, and Sasquatch.

I know way too much about the Bigfoot/Sasquatch legend and aw, give these guys a break: at least it's a fun pseudoscience, unlike the purveyors of ID and the Hitler-Darwin-Stalin hopscotch.

I would totally go on a Sasquatch expedition: camping, campfire food, the night sky, wildlife. (Although it's called the yeti or the omnista (sp?) in Asia.) As long as the explorers are mountain explorers and know what they are doing, and keep the hair gel and the Blair Witch knock-offs to a minimum.

I don't like to think of what the late, notoriously irascible Sasquatch hunter Rene Dahinden would have done to this guy! (Even if it was real, why is Bigfoot "scary"? The creature is reportedly peaceful. But then again, why are people "scared" of "ghosts"? Why the fear?) But if you want to know more about this phenom check out the documentary Sasquatch Odyssey.

Oddly enough (or not), the Bigfoot legend mostly appeals to middle-aged white men, and "ghosts" to white, single women. That probably says more about Fox News' watchers than anything else.

I'd go for the camping sex, but only if I could take my babe with me.  Hairy woodsmen will not do.
