For collection purposes, let's say we'll list languages you can either read or understand, if not perfectly, then at least functionally. Let's not list things we have only a smattering of. My list: English (native) French Spanish Italian Latin Russian Over to you guys...

I once passed an exam that allowed me to claim fluency in German - but that was some time ago. I had about 5 years of Latin, and was reasonably good at reading it, but never spoke it. Also took courses in Italian, Greek (koine), and learned a little Russian, a little Spanish, and a little (modern) Greek on my own. -------------- Must... not... scratch... mosquito bite.

I would say English too, but I used to play soccer with some British guys and I couldn't understand a single word they said.  (One was from Birmingham and the other from southern Scotland.) Edit:  And, I call it "soccer."  World Cup starts today!

Elsberry Posts: 4991 Joined: May 2002 (Permalink) Posted: June 09 2006,09:30    English Spanish - I can read enough Spanish to get around when travelling, and understand simple, very slowly spoken Spanish -- the sort you never actually find. About Portugese - I visited Portugal for a conference in 1998, and I found enough overlap with Spanish to be able to work out basic travel instructions, advisories, etc. on the trip. Diane and I spent a night in Milfontes, which apparently is a tourist spot for the Portugese. We rented a suite for the night from a fellow, though he didn't speak English and we certainly didn't speak Portugese. What few words of Spanish (from high school) and German (from college) that are still stuck in my memory aren't nearly enough to translate anything. I do though recall reading a BB post from a lady from Portugal who moved to N.J. She decided to bring up her kids speaking English, and not teach them Portugese unless/until they got old enough to decide such things. Then one day she noticed that they had somehow learned how to swear in Portugese. And apparently quite well, too. Henry
