One of my colleagues at MSU mentioned the risk associated with vaccination programs, essentially that as more of a population is vaccinated and becomes non-susceptible to the strain(s) that the vaccine targeted, those strains become weaker competitors for novel variants with partial or complete vaccine escape.
That would indicate that immunizations should be rapid, to give less time for the evolution of variants that do have some degree of vaccine escape, and that active cases be kept low, to reduce opportunities for that evolution to occur.
