I was thinking of a certain N. Eisner you just interacted with when I wrote that.

My initial interest was in Fazale Rana, who posts there occasionally.

I reviewed his book on origin of life years ago.

You may have heard about the 20,000 christians who petitioned Netflix to cancel Good Omens, despite the minor facts that 1) it was released by Amazon, not Netflix, and 2) it is already finished.

The BBC referred to this as "Creationism-level stupidity"

Well, I did a 3 part blog post to the Disco'tute slam on me for exposing just 3:45 minutes of James Tour.

The first is

So far there has been nothing from the Disco'tutes. One amusing thing is watching the page view counts. There was about a week between the first and last posts. Readership has been about 1/2 for each subsequent post.

First is the time lag. Second, the Part 1 is a little boring. The Disco'tutes made a big thing about my lack of skills. I gave my CV in chemistry.

I did think the lab story was fun. I thought the DEA cop was going to choke.

Caught an episode of "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader" today.

One of the questions was: Living things are grouped into five kingdoms. Protists, bacteria, animals, fungi, and one other. What's the missing item?

Well, once I recovered from the question, I figured out what actual kingdom was missing from the list.

Do any recent textbooks actually refer to protists and/or bacteria as a "kingdom"? IIRC, bacteria is a domain not a kingdom, and protists is not even a clade, as a clade containing all protists would also include animals, fungi, and plants.

The "three domains" a la Woese are the Archaea, Bacteria, and Eukaryotes.

I suppose their "five kingdoms" would be archaea, bacteria, critters with mitochondria, cells with chloroplasts, and viruses?

Oh! They said that "fungi" are a kingdom.

So plants would fall into that lame categorization.

Yeah, they named animals and fungi kingdoms, so plants is what was missing. Plants and animals are traditionally known as kingdoms, and I've read stuff that referred to fungi as a kingdom.

Here's a good view of what's supposed to be taught in Texas. They include both the three domain system and the six kingdom system. Exploring the differences between the classification systems seems far more useful than teaching the current consensus (which, knowing taxonomists, has probably changed since the start of class).
