The idea of building a tidal barrage on the Severn in the UK is occasionally floated, but usually sinks quite quickly. Here in Norway most power is hydro (we export our evil contamination), but there's work on off-shore wind power going on. Our electric company tried selling us solar panels, but that was when I had some masters students looking at power consumption, and of course there's a negative correlation with solar radiation and power consumption(*).
ATM the UK could probably get most of its energy by recycling all of the hot air being produced in the Houses of Parliament.
(*) this is true on the other side of the fjord, at least.
