So, they have basically converted centuries of culture and governmental inertia into a Risk game.

I think (meaning "I know, but I'm humble enough to realize I might be wrong) that their issue remains an inability to understand extremely complex things, change those complex things to simple things that they can understand, view those simple things only from their POV, and then freak out because they think the world is freaking out.

He's got this spread out on the dining-room table, hasn't he?  With little model ships and tanks.

I see the Denmark Strait is a "sea trade choke point".  Fiendish Johnny Muslim wants to cut off Baffin Island from Svalbard.

I imagine he has it pinned to the wall along with lots of pieces of multi-colored string and newspaper clippings.
