That office is concerned with use of government funds with respect to NSF-funded research: funds not being misused, people doing what they promised to do with the funds they were given, and where funds can most usefully be spent:

Quote
Offer analysis and advice on critical government-wide initiatives, such as computer security, program performance, workforce planning, and financial management.
Look independently at problems and recommend solutions.
Issue factual reports based on professional auditing, investigative, and evaluation standards.
Investigate fraud, misuse of funds, and other violations of laws and regulations.
Provide technical and consultative advice as the agency develops new plans.
Maintain a hotline for reporting confidential information on fraud and abuse.

This has absolutely nothing to do with the practice of science outside of science funded by NSF.  If someone uses NIH funds to run off to the Bahamas with a secretary and spends six months writing up results of pretend experiments to support a bogus theory, the NSF OIG has no jurisdiction or official interest.  (No doubt they would pass the information on to the NIH OIG [ http://oig.hhs.gov/....hhs....hhs.gov ], but they are not any sort of general authority in science.)

I only began to show what kind of trouble is in store for those who have been knowingly or unknowingly helping to mislead the general public in regards to scientific issues that the taxpayers are paying to have resolved, not start a civil war over.

The theory of intelligent design holds that certain features of the universe and of living things are best explained by an intelligent cause, not an undirected process such as natural selection.
