My theory is that the aliens are actively taking over the planet using religion.
Step one: build a religion. Jesus was probably an alien collaborator. Paul too, unless he was an alien. L. Ron Hubbard was definitely an alien. I suspect that the Catholic Church is run by aliens.
Step two: use the strength of the religion to promote poor thinking skills and elect morons/quislings to positions of power. Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers.
Step three: Prepare the population using religion to promote the likeness of the aliens as 'angels' or some direct representative of 'god'. Based on popular movies, I'm going to bet that the aliens are shape-shifting vampires. Think about it, vampires are super popular now. They've gone from demonic monsters of pure death and destruction to 'the noble dead'. Our culture very nearly worships vampires... heck, based on the popularity of some recent novels, a lot of people would be perfectly happy being subjugated by a vampire... provided that the vampire is cute.
Step four: appear and take the reins to a totally controlled population.
No muss, no fuss, no war over interstellar distances. One appearance, then travel time back and forth, and bang. Pwned population.
