Ugh. Total incoherence. If something is self-evident, it's not objective—by definition.
Consider someone who knows how to reason, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." Notice that the author doesn't claim anything other than what he and his colleagues find to be self-evident. Indeed, they were quite aware that others, such as King George III, did not agree. However, if you accept the premise—and many people did and do—, the syllogism contained in the Declaration of Independence makes for a powerful argument.
