At a guess - a cell that reacts to presence of light would have the use of detecting whether it is light or dark out.

Well... "half an eye" allows an organism to detect light and thus move toward or away from it. Arguing via analogy, "half a brain" allows for an organism to detect thought and thus move toward or away from it. Clearly, the UD fitness landscape rewards movement away from thought. |
lets just say they have only half evolved so they not only have half a brain but half a leg etc
