In other words, an evolving gene pool has some of the attributes normally associated with intelligence? (Something analogous to curiosity, and a form of memory of what worked.)

Although, not quite all of them. (No foresight, no way to copy/paste a solution that somebody else thought up, no record of what failed and why.)

(Oh, and also no centralized thinking; it's all distributed.)
