As in evolutionary change, not only does the interconnectedness and interdependency of the elements of a story fail to present an obstacle to change, it actually provides new avenues for change.

In my trivial "Mary had a little lamb" example above, I've changed a single line stepwise - the second line. In so doing the meaning (and function!) of the last line, "the lamb was sure to go" is crucially altered, altering the direction of the entire stanza, without being itself changed.

An awful lot of evolution works this way (e.g. exaptation).
