I have come across redwoods that were downed by loggers ~20 years earlier, and they seemed quite usable.

I excavated a historic site that had a cedar post that had been in quite damp ground ~120 years.

When we carbon date sites here in SoCal (and else where for that matter) we need to determine the species of wood. The locals prior to the introduction of metal used dead wood for their fires. Oak typically gave dates 1 to 2 hundred years older than short lived trees like willow.
