Words of Wisdom from vjtorley in the StephenB Debut thread:
Quote
By the way, computers don’t perform formal operations; they are simply man-made material devices that are designed to mimic these operations. A computer is no more capable of addition than a cash register, an abacus or a Rube Goldberg machine.

VJ is hardly the first person to notice that.  Who among us hasn't idly typed >PRINT 2+2 into an old 8-bit machine and been flabbergasted to see it print out >4?  I remember doing that once when I was a young man and thinking to myself, "What incredible luck!"

Onlookers!  Think about it!  There are literally an infinity of possible answers the computer could have printed out, yet through sheer dumb luck the answer it comes up with happens to equal the sum of 2 and 2!

Don't give me any of that Universal Probability Bound, Dr. Dr. Dembski.  This is so far beyond the UPB that a man of lesser faith might actually start to believe that Mere Hardware could accurately add 2+2.

Thank you for helping us stay anchored to reality, Mr. Torley.
