A friend with a prominent gut was surprised when he tried my 12-24mm on his D700, and got part of his shirt in a pic of his house. If you check my blog's header, you'll see several examples of panorama and wide-angle views. Some people see wide-angle easier than others, and part of my experience included using a 75mm superwide on 4x5" gear.

My first purchase of SLR gear at all was a Nikkor 24mm f/2.8 lens. It was another few months before I was able to afford a SLR to put it on. Recently, I bought my Nikon N80 off of eBay for $42, meaning that it cost in the same neighborhood as the Kodak Instamatic my mom got me in grade school, or far less if one factors in inflation.
