So Halloween is coming up. I need a good costume idea for Franklin Street. My first choice is this one:

I'm a 6' white guy with blonde hair, so I'm close already. It's dirty blonde instead of platinum blonde, but still. And I've even got an ex who says she'll sew it for me.

One alternative idea is, I could go buy some ill-fitting clothes at the thrift store, drop from 240 lbs to 135 lbs, pay a homeless guy $3 to give me a haircut with a pocketknife, walk around saying "2+2=13", and go as Bill Dembski.

But I'm open to suggestions. What's everybody thinking about for Halloween this year?

You as Daphne.

You could dress up as a tiger, then kidnap a 6 year old boy and go as Calvin and Hobbes.

Sorry for the confusion, Arden, I wasn't going for the YEC reference just the judeo-christian origin reference.

But if you go by actual reality-based evidence, Judeo-Christian tradition isn't 6,000 years old.

Feel free to use this one..a design previously used by a person that shall remain nameless.
White shoes, socks, pants and shirt. White stage makeup on any exposed skin. A white fright wig and a white rope hanging from a belt loop. Voila--a tampon.
To be even more edgy, use a red fright wig.

Oh, alternatively, if you don't feel so ...ermmm...bold, you could wear the same get up (sans rope), with white wig and white fuzzy slippers and say you're a q-tip.

Right now we're running a couple of ideas around:

The Bee (our daughter) and her Da may go as an archer (the Bee) and a target, or as a cat and a dog.  They always do the trick or treat bit together, and so try to have matching costumes.  I'll probably do my mad eye doctor bit again if they go with one of those.   Greet the kids with the prop jar of extremely realistic rubber eyeballs, demanding to know if they are there to pick up the donation to the eye bank, then get all cranky when they don't have the cooler, and give them candy instead.

The other possibility includes me on door duty dressing up as Carmen Sandiego while the Bee and her Da dress as detectives and scour the community for me while collecting candy clues.

Dude, I don't know where you live, but if it's anywhere near Southern California, you should drive down to Tijuana, Mexico.  They've got vendors walking around, selling lucha libre masks by the dozen!

Just enough time for a quick comedy post:

As young adults every New Year's Eve my friends and I used to go to a little seaside town up the coast from our home. Every year the idea was that everybody turned up in fancy dress and had a street party (yes, on Dec 31st! Cold but FUN). The pubs were always rammed full and the streets heaving.

We set ourselves the task of bettering our fancy dress every year, and this continued for about 4 years. The penultimate year we all turned up as fridges. We cut the innards and heat exchangers out of old fridges, cut holes to get our bodies and arms through, and wore these old fridges as fancy dress. My friend even wired a car battery up to his fridge so that the light came on when you opened the door. We were very well recieved by the public, specifically the ladies, that evening.

The year after we wanted to all go as a car, so we bought an old wreck and proceeded to strip it clear of any superfluous parts. However, we went to France the night before New Year to get some cheap booze and ended up missing the ferry due to excessive drunkenness. Unfortunately we made it back to town too late to finish the car and get to the street party. So just went in normal clothes and got very drunk.

Ah memories!

Louis

Did someone say "costumes"?

A friend of ours has the ultimate Halloween party each year (her home is decorated year-round), and I'm considering going as Elizabeth Short--a.k.a. The Black Dahlia--partly so that I can correct the factual errors in that horrible flick.

[Is this costume one piece or two?]

Hey! :D  :p

I didn't even think of that!

Being that I am a belly dancer, I could certainly wear something that appeared to be one piece--and then have my upper half suddenly "float off" (as it were) to reveal my tattered midsection...

Yuck! Very good idea. Excellent.

Eeeew. And I thought my walking tampon idea was skirting the extremes of taste. Not that I frown on that :)
It's weird, even here in L.A., the movie barely made a stir...perhaps because it was so badly muddled. You're a bold and twisted woman, Kristine, my hat is off to you.

steve: what do you think about posting Halloween photos later? I think I might go hit the Hollywood street party.

Whilst I have no urls for pictures for ya' Rev, you can find Kristine's blog at http://amused-muse.blogspot.com/.

You might get a more prompt response there.  Great blog, highly recommended by both myself and the girls.

OMnG, this is so deliciously sick, I can't believe that I thought of it...

But I'll have a photo taken of me as Liz Short...
...with my friends forcing my head into a vise, as in the film...
...and I'll e-mail it to Bill Dembski. :O

(I mix my metaphors a lot.)
It's Dembski's fault that I'm this way!  :D

Hmmm...I would learn to sleep with one eye open--or get up first.

Though I ran out of the meds in March.

OK, OK, before you call the FBI, I was just kidding!

I am somewhat of a Dahlia buff, first heard about it when I was pretty young--maybe in my early teens--and it stuck with me.  I still can't handle the pictures.  Have you kept up with it (other than the movie)?

Yes, I’ve kept up—and I’m convinced that the guilty party is Jack Anderson Wilson (a.k.a. Arnold Smith).

Severed by John Gilmore is the best source in my opinion (it has the photos, and they ain’t pretty).

I like George Hodel.  Though it's up for grabs, I like his house with a secret room, the fact he is a doctor, the wire tap transcripts, the lack of ability to control his sexual appetite, etc.

I think too much has been made over the false identification of the pictures his son found.  They weren't Elizabeth, but they were of a woman who looks like Elizabeth.  Men tend to like a certain "type" of woman.

Me?  I prefer red heads.  And in one piece.

Pretty funny.

And I don't think this thread has anything "on topic."

I think for this halloween I will dress up as a 43 year old white balding guy.  With a really hot wife.  Yeah, that's the ticket.

I saw a costume with an "attached bride" head in the costume grab-room at the party last night, but I can't find an example to show you--basically a latex ugly bride head and hands that attaches to your shoulder.

Morticia and I commiserated about how heartless Hollywood can chew an actress up and spit her out, although I pointed out that at least she has a regular series. Lots of sympathy for my comeback attempt, especially from Johnny Cash.

If you're still looking for ideas, Steve, one friend of mine came as Garden Gnome Chomsky, and another as Lumberjackie O. (I coveted her red-and-green checkered pillbox hat.)
